Höegh Traveller transports out-of-gauge cargo from Germany to Australia

Recently Höegh Autoliners was asked to transport the first two of four Bombardier trams from Germany to Australia for the extension of the Gold Coast Light Rail System (GCLR).

The project involves extending the northern line of the GCLR system to connect with the main Brisbane to Gold Coast train line ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
DB Schenker, global freight forwarder tasked to handle Bombardier’s logistic operations, in turn chose Höegh Autoliners to provide the ocean transportation with their experience in handling out-of-gauge cargo and providing customised RoRo solutions.

With each tram comprising of a length of 43.5 metres, this presented a challenge, as the units could not be placed on a single roll-trailer, which has a maximum length of 24.4 metres.
Geir Paulsen, Global Breakbulk Operation Manager says, “We came up with a unique solution – the extended rolltrailer concept – which involves placing two railed rolltrailers in front of each other and connecting them with our Höegh Bridge. These have been tested and approved and the prototype was used for this operation”
Geir continues, "The railcars were loaded on a special truck trailer at the factory in Austria and driven directly on board Höegh Traveller in Bremerhaven. On board the vessel, the trams were pulled from the 50 metre long truck trailer to the extended rolltrailer concept.”

Breaking a record, this was the first time a tram of this size has been loaded in one piece on a RoRo vessel. The railcars were successfully discharged in Brisbane following their six-week, 14 000 nautical mile sea journey.
Geir continues, “With the success of this shipment it proves that our development in customised solutions offer higher quality and less risk for new types of cargo which would not have normally been loaded on a RoRo vessel in the past.”

kea trader breaks in half
The 2017-built MV Kea Trader seen broken in two off New Caledonia.

Severe weather in the South Pacific has caused the grounded Kea Trader to break in two over the weekend, further complicating an already difficult salvage operation that is now in its fifth month.

The Maltese-flagged MV Kea Trader was just a few months old when it ran aground on Durand Reef in New Caledonia on July 12, and it has remained stuck there ever since. Several attempts to refloat the vessel have been unsuccessful.

Last month, the owner of the vessel, Lomar Shipping, declared the ship a total loss and said it would have to be scrapped.

Although crews were able to remove the the bulk of the fuel and cargo on board, the vessel still contains an unspecified amount of residual oil and about 100 containers below deck.

Authorities said a few containers were lost overboard when it broke up over the weekend.

According to officials all salvage personnel had been evacuated from the ship in anticipation of the severe weather.

The cause grounding is still under investigation.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries seeks anchor for shipbuilding unit in China

Kawasaki Heavy Industries is dramatically overhauling its traditional shipbuilding business, shifting a large part of commercial shipbuilding to China in what could be a model for other ailing Japanese shipbuilders.
The main goal of Kawasaki's reorganization is to make better use of its shipyard in China, which is larger than its facilities in Japan, and better laid out, allowing for more efficient shipbuilding. Domestic production will be reduced to around 25% from 40%, with China picking up the rest.

Located in a vast area along the Yangtze River in Nantong, Jiangsu Province about 130km from Shanghai, is Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering, or Nacks, a 50-50 joint venture between China Cosco Shipping and Kawasaki Heavy.
Nacks has a proven track record of building state-of-the-art car carriers and other ships. It has built more than 100 ships since its inception in 1995, including China's first super-large tankers and large container vessels.

Shipbuilding processes are arranged according to workflow, from the delivery, cutting and processing of steel plates to parts manufacturing, assembly and coating of hull blocks and welding at the docks.
Nacks' clean layout is a marked contrast to Japanese shipyards, where processes are often separate from one another as equipment has been added gradually in confined spaces.
Nacks' productivity is symbolized by the assembly yard next to a 500-meter dock, where super-large hull blocks are assembled in a large area about the size of a dock 80 meters wide. The blocks are then loaded into the hull space using two portal cranes.

"We can speed up the overall shipbuilding time by increasing the workload outside the dock," said Masakazu Kusuyama, vice president of Nacks.

Kawasaki Heavy was founded in 1878, when Shozo Kawasaki opened a shipyard in Tokyo's Tsukiji district, which is famous today for its fish market and sushi restaurants.
Japan once accounted for half of the tonnage of global shipbuilding, but now accounts for only about 20%. Only a few attempts have been made to move production overseas, unlike other industries, due to the fact that Japan's shipping-related industries are knit closely together in "clusters," including marine equipment manufacturers, steelmakers and financial institutions that provide the funding. But that may need to change if the industry is to survive and succeed.
