Sicilian passenger ferry sinks after smashing into pier

A commercial hydrofoil partially sank on Thursday afternoon (Jun16) after it smashed into a pier on the Sicilian island of Stromboli.
There were no reported casualties in the incident, with the boat's 117 passengers and six crew members all managing to disembark the craft safely, local media reported.

The incident happened at around 4pm local time when the vessel, named 'Massaccio', came in to moor at the island's main harbour. Strong winds caused the docking manoeuver to go badly wrong and the boat slammed into a concrete pier.

The coastguard, police and port authorities intervened to safely evacuate the passengers and crew from the stricken vessel, but could do nothing to stop the Massaccio's prow from sinking into the shallow waters around the pier.
The Massaccio ran passenger services between Stromboli and the Aeolian islands of Lipari and Milazzo and will be salvaged from the water on Friday.
The incident was caused by the violent sirocco winds – which blow over Sicily from the Sahara desert.
Videos of the rescue operation can be seen below:

World’s largest nuclear icebreaker made from MMK metal launched.

On Thursday (Jun16) the Baltic Shipyard in St Petersburg (Russia) floated out the universal nuclear icebreaker Arktika (project 22220). Metal for the body of this, the world’s largest and most powerful icebreaker, was supplied by OJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK).

MMK accounts for more than 50% of all metal supplies to Russia’s shipbuilding industry. In 2015, MMK shipped 86,000 tonnes of metal to domestic ship builders, up nearly 11% year-on-year and up approximately 1.5x against 2013.

MMK-produced steel is used to construct a number of modern icebreakers. In addition to Arktika and the Project 22220’s first series-produced icebreaker Siberia, it is used on the diesel-electric icebreaker Aker ARC 130 А, the largest multifunctional line diesel-electric icebreaker named Victor Chernomyrdin, and others.

Nuclear icebreaker Arktika is set for sea trials in 2017. This ship with a draught of 33,500 tonnes is 173m long and 34m wide, and will be able to reach speeds of up to 22 knots. Arktika will be able to pilot convoys of vessels in arctic conditions, breaking ice up to 3m wide.

MMK’s steel production for the shipbuilding industry has been expanded following the commissioning of the thick plate Mill 5000 in 2009.

The thick plate mill can produce steel used to manufacture the Russian naval fleet, tankers, modern ice-class vessels. Mill 5000 steel for shipbuilding is certified by organisations such as Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas of France, the American Bureau of Shipping, Det Norske Veritas in Norway, Germanischer Lloyd, and the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

MMK is one of the world's largest steel producers and a leading Russian metals company. The company's operations in Russia include a large steel-producing complex encompassing the entire production chain, from the preparation of iron ore to downstream processing of rolled steel. MMK turns out a broad range of steel products with a predominant share of high-value-added products. In 2015, the company produced 12.2 million tonnes of crude steel and 11.2 million tonnes of commercial steel products. MMK Group had sales in 2015 of USD 5,839 million and EBITDA of USD 1,668 million.

Boskalis acquires VolkerWessels

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. has signed a letter of intent to acquire the offshore activities of VolkerWessels. Under the intended transaction, Boskalis will acquire the maritime and offshore wind energy related activities of VolkerWessels which includes VBMS, Stemat and Volker Stevin International.

Boskalis and VolkerWessels have been working together successfully for years in the offshore wind energy market. VBMS, a 50/50 Boskalis - VolkerWessels joint venture, is the European market leader in the field of offshore cable installation with a strong market position and well-filled order book. As a consequence of this transaction, Boskalis will acquire the remaining 50% share in VBMS.

Stemat has a global offering of specialized vessels including a cable laying vessel and multi-purpose vessels. VSI is specialised in the construction of offshore foundations and maritime constructions. Last year Boskalis and VSI in a joint venture acquired two large offshore wind park projects, Wikinger and Veja Mate. As a consequence of this transaction, Boskalis will now execute these two projects on a 100% basis.

The current annual revenue, excluding the two offshore wind park projects, amounts to approximately €200 million. This agreement will bring the Boskalis order book to more than €600 million, of which more than EUR 200 million is attributable to the two offshore wind park projects that are currently being executed. It is the intention that this transaction will be completed in the near future.

Peter Berdowski, the CEO of Boskalis commented, "For many years we have been working closely and constructively with VolkerWessels and this acquisition is a logical and desirable step for our strategy aimed at strengthening our offshore service proposition."
