Harry, Louis,

mvg

Baltic Shipyard secures state contract for 60MW icebreaker of 22 220 Project.
JSC Baltiysky Zavod-Shipbuilding has been awarded state contract worth RUB 36.9 billion for the construction of the lead multipurpose icebreaker LK-60 with capacity of 60 MW of 22220 Project, the shipbuilding company said. The shipyard was the only contender for the order. On August 3 the tender was announced void and its only bidder was chosen to execute the contract. FSUE Atomflot invited bids for the icebreaker contract on July 3, 2012. Under the turn-key contract terms, Baltic Shipyard is to complete the order by December 30, 2017 and dock the newbuild at the berth of FSUE Atomflot in Murmansk. The keel-laying of the new icebreaker is scheduled for November 2013, launching ceremony for November 2015. In accordance with the approved schedule, bookmark the icebreaker on the stocks is scheduled for November 2013, launching - in November 2015. The scope of work included: development of technical documents, the construction (including the installation of nuclear power plant), outfitting, launching, on-dock testing, sea and icebreaking trials and the newbuild acceptance certificate signing by the state committee. The icebreaker LK-60 of 22 220 project will be the largest and most powerful icebreaker in the world, the report said. Ship’s main characteristics: length overall - 173.3 m, beam molded - 34 meters, draft at DWL - 10.5 m, minimum loaded draft - 8.55 m, displacement - 33.54 tons. The new generation double-reactor plant "RHYTHM 200" designed by Rosatom’s "OKBM" has reactors of thermal capacity of 170 MW each - more than that of the plants used in modern nuclear icebreakers (140-150 MW). The vessel features advanced double-draft capability, which makes it suitable for operations both in the Arctic waters, and in the mouths of the northern rivers. The icebreaker will be operating in the western region of the Arctic, the Barents, Pechora and Kara Seas and in shallow waters of the mouth of the Yenisei and the Ob Bay. Source : PortNews

Helsinki Shipyard to deliver Arctic OSV ahead of schedule
Finland's Arctech Helsinki Shipyard reports that it will complete the Arctic offshore supply vessel Vitus Bering four months ahead of schedule. The vessel is now set for delivery December 18. Initially, it was to be delivered in April 2013. Arctech Helsinki Shipyard is a 50/50 joint venture between STX Finland and Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation. It is building two identical offshore icebreaking supply vessels for Russia's largest shipping group Sovcomflot (SCF Group), a world leader in ice-management and shipping in harsh environments.
The vessels will supply Exxon Neftegas Limited's platform in Arkutun-Dagi oil and gas field in Sakhalin area, Far East Russia. The development of the field is proceeding at good pace, which is why the icebreaking offshore supply vessels are needed in the area. The main task of the Arctic offshore vessels is to supply the oil and gas production platform and to protect it from the ice. Both vessels measure 99.9 m in length and 21.7 m in breadth. Their four engines have a total power of 18,000 kW and a propulsion power of 13,000 kW. The two vessels have been designed for extreme environmental conditions, they will be operating in thick drifting ice in temperatures as cold as minus 35 C°. Their icebreaking capability is extremely high, they are able to operate independently in 1.7 meter thick ice. As multipurpose vessels, they are capable of carrying various type of cargo and are equipped for oil spill response, fire fighting, and rescue operations. "The building of Vitus Bering has proceeded well, and we are now able to finalize it four months in advance," says the Project Manager for the newbuildings, Jonas Packalén of Arctech Helsinki Shipyard. He adds that the building of the sister vessel is proceeding well and its launching is planned for November-December 2012.
"Vitus Bering and her sister vessel are great examples of Finnish shipbuilding," says Esko Mustamäki, Managing Director of Arctech Helsinki Shipyard. "Modern design and long-term shipbuilding experience are combined in these projects. The finalizing of the vessels four months in advance has required excellent cooperation and team spirit. I'm sure that Vitus Bering and her sister vessel are a good start for prospective projects with participation of Russian United Shipbuilding Corporation and Sovcomflot for future work in the Russian Arctic. "The building of these two multifunctional icebreaking offshore vessels is the first order for Arctech, the joint venture owned by United Shipbuilding Corporation and STX Finland," says Andrey Djachkov, the President of United Shipbuilding Corporation. "This kind of cooperation between Russia and Finland is totally new, and I am happy to see that these new generation vessels with strong ice class are being built together with Russian and Finnish specialists. The vessels will be registered in Russia, they will work under the Russian flag and the crew will be Russian. Russia has a long experience working with Finnish shipbuilders. I think that collaboration in building these high technology vessels will undoubtedly assist further development of the Russian-Finnish shipbuilding cluster." Source : MarineLog

First Chinese ship makes trip to Atlantic via Arctic
The first Chinese ship has travelled from the Pacific to Atlantic via the Arctic along the Russian coast, an Icelandic scientist who participated on the expedition said Friday. The Chinese icebreaker Xuelong, or Snow Dragon, docked in Iceland after having sailed the so-called Northern Sea Route from the Pacific, Egill Thor Nielsson told AFP. "This is the first Chinese ship to sail this route and of course it is important because it's a more than 40 percent shorter route to Europe," he said. The Chinese are even more interested in this route after having found the passage relatively easy. "It took almost ten days to sail from the East Siberian Sea and through the Barents Sea, and during that time there was real pack ice for only seven days," he said. Climate change is opening the prospect of commercial shipping via the Northern Sea Route or the Northwest Passage north of Canada. More and more ships are travelling via the Northern Sea Route. Four made the passage in 2010, 34 last year and the figure will be higher this year, said Nielsson.
The Snow Dragon, bought from Ukraine in 1993, is currently China's only ice breaker. A second being built in China with the help of a Finnish company, should be completed in 2014. Source : ANP/AFP

3 icebreakers operate on the Northern Sea Route
There are currently three nuclear icebreakers assisting merchant shipping on the Northern Sea Route – the Russia, the Yamal" and the 50 Years of Victory. The last vessel has just recently completed a series of cruises to the North Pole, Atomflot said.
Another Atomflot’s vessel, the icebreaker Vaigach has completed its work on lines and has returned to the home port for routine maintenance and to prepare for winter navigation. The icebreaker Russia will soon head for Murmansk Malaysia, but in early September, will go back to the Arctic for the annual research expedition of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute to remove a manned drifting ice station NP-39 (North Pole-39) and to set up another one (NP-40). The icebreaker will depart the home port on September 8. Source : PortNews
