MAGDALENA -- ILE DE LUMIERE
Een paar jaar geleden heb ik het proberen uit te zoeken.
Hierbij mijn verhaaltje:
There have been few ships with this name and I remember having been on board one or two of them many years ago, possibly in Brisbane.
Also attended one of the ships in drydock.
ILE DE LUMIERE (1)
There was the Ile de Lumiere (say number 1)
What I can find out is the following:
IMO 5086217 GRT 963 DWT 1503
Built by L. Smit in Kinderdijk, Holland in 1962. yard no 451.
Launched as Danielle V - French flag, but soon renamed Magdalena
In 1968 changed to Liberian flag, retained the name Magdalena and was managed by Dammers and v.d Heide, Rotterdam.
In 1974 or 1975 she was sold to the above company in New Caledonia and renamed Ile de Lumiere.
In 1986 sold to Clarens Navigation in Tonga and renamed LUPE
Renamed for same company in 1987 to SEINI
Eventually broken up in Kaohsiung in April 1988.
As ILE DE LUMIERE she had quite a career.
The full story as follows from NZ Maritime info bulletin:
quote
Usual role as a cargo carrier between NZ and the Pacific Islands interrupted when chartered by the Comite Un Bateau Pour Le Vietnam to aid Vietnames boat people. Was refitted in Noumea in March 1979 with 120 beds and 4 operating theatres.
She spent 3 months anchored off an Island in West Malaysia, treating some of the 40,000 Vietnamese refugees there, and later sailed round the South China Sea rescuing others from small boats and working under UN control to provide medical aid. When larger hospital vessels arrived in the area she was sent to Kampuchea by the committee to ferry food supplies under the Red Cross, and in this role was the first of the international fleet to travel up the Mekong River since it was reopened to shipping. After 9 months of work for the committee she was again chartered by Sofrana Unilines of New Caldeonia for cargo work and arrived at Onehunga on 9 March 1980, from Norfolk island

Ik heb nog meer uitgebreide informatie maar veel komt op hetzelfde neer.
I herinner me betrokken te zijn geweest met dit schip als ILE DE LUMIERE.
Groetjes
