Van Oord completes expansion of Taiwan's largest port

Van Oord recently completed the expansion of the port of Kaohsiung. The client, Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC), awarded the contract in 2015. The work was completed eight months ahead of schedule.

In less than two years’ time, trailing suction hopper dredgers Vox Máxima, Volvox Terranova, and Rotterdam created 250 hectares of new land for the Kaohsiung Intercontinental Container Center Phase II.
‘The availability of the right equipment at the right moment and excellent cooperation within the internationally assembled project team contributed to the early completion and overall success of this project. It was the first time Van Oord had been engaged as a main contractor in Taiwan,’ says Van Oord’s Area Manager Martin Meijers.
The new land will accommodate many terminals and wharves, some of which will be able to handle container vessels of up to 22,000 TEU.

Taiwan International Ports Corporation: ‘The Port of Kaohsiung is Taiwan’s largest port. Each day, around 150 vessels pass through the port, where more than 10 million containers are transhipped each year. The expansion enables future growth and will strengthen the position of the port of Kaohsiung as Taiwan’s maritime gateway.’

Boskalis joint venture awarded Martin Garcia Channel dredging contract

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) has been awarded a 5-year contract by the Comision Administradora del Rio de la Plata (CARP), for the capital and maintenance dredging of the Martín García channel, located between Uruguay and Argentina in the northern part of the 50-kilometer-wide Rio de la Plata estuary. The contract carries a total value for the 50/50 joint venture with DEME of approximately EUR 110 million and signing is expected to take place in the coming weeks.

The Martín García channel is the main access channel to Uruguay's second largest port, Nueva Palmira, as well as to the Rio Uruguay. The main objective of the dredging program is to deepen the canal and subsequently maintain a depth of 34 feet over the contract period.

The capital dredging work will be performed in 2018, when approximately 6 million cubic meters of mainly sand and silt will be removed with two trailing suction hopper dredgers as well as approximately 500,000 cubic meters of clay and rock with a large backhoe. The maintenance contract requires the annual removal of approximately 5 million cubic meters of mainly sand and silt, over a subsequent period of four years and will be carried out with a trailing suction hopper dredger.

The Boskalis strategy is designed to benefit from the key macro-economic drivers that fuel global demand in our selected markets: global trade, increasing energy consumption, population growth and the challenges of changing climate conditions. This project is driven by the growth in global trade.

Keel laying ceremony marks milestone in the construction of world’s most powerful cutter suction dredger ‘Spartacus’

Yesterday the keel laying ceremony took place for DEME’s cutter suction dredger ‘Spartacus’ at the Royal IHC shipyard in Krimpen aan den Ijssel in the Netherlands. The ceremony marks a milestone in the construction of the most powerful cutter suction dredger that has ever been built.

The combination of power, size and new innovations make mega cutter ‘Spartacus’ a new benchmark in the dredging industry. With a total installed power of 44.180 kW, the vessel will be able to cut harder soils at speeds that have not been possible before. This means that works can be taken on by the cutter dredger rather than relying on the use of dynamite and blasting.

‘Spartacus’ will be able to dredge in waters of up to 45 m, compared to the 35 m depth which is presently the upper limit in the market. The dredger is capable of operating in very remote locations with limited infrastructure, given the fuel autonomy and accommodation capacity. The environmentally friendly cutter suction dredger will also have other innovations on board, such as a waste heat recovery system that converts heat from the exhaust gasses to electrical energy.

The 164 m long ‘Spartacus’ will be the world’s first dual fuel cutter suction dredger. It will have a Green Passport and Clean Design notation. DEME’s newest additions to the fleet are all designed as green vessels equipped with next generation dual fuel engines, capable of running on LNG or diesel fuel, reducing carbon emissions, almost eliminating particulate matter, sulphur oxides (Sox) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

‘Spartacus’ will join the DEME fleet in 2019.
