Specifically for this project, Jan De Nul Group reconfigured its multi-purpose vessel Willem de Vlamingh into an efficient Umbilical Installation Vessel. The two umbilicals, with a total length of 69 km, were loaded in Norway in May 2018 and transported to Egypt. The challenging installation campaign started with a 3-km beach pull for which the Willem de Vlamingh positioned in water depths of only 7 m. Water depths significantly increased along the route. The campaign was successfully finalized early August 2018 with the precise installation of the Umbilical Termination Assembly at 600 metres water depth.
In order to safeguard the critical main umbilical, installation and burial were performed in parallel: Willem de Vlamingh installed the umbilical onto the seabed, directly followed by Isaac Newton for simultaneous burying of the umbilical using the jet trenching method.

Wouter Vermeersch, Manager Cables and Umbilicals at Jan De Nul Group: “We are very proud to have executed this umbilical installation campaign. It again proves our versatile approach and expertise in various operational fields, both onshore, nearshore and offshore. Our staff and crew members on site performed a very precise work in challenging conditions.”

David Down, Project Manager at Subsea7: ”The safe and successful installation of the main umbilicals by Jan De Nul Group represents a key milestone on our project. Jan De Nul’s technical expertise and collaborative approach ensured a successful outcome despite the complexity associated with the beach pull and shallow water operations.

Some moments from the project you can see in the video below:

According to the Norway based shipowner Offshore Heavy Transport (OHT), they are increasing their capabilities to become a full transport and installation contractor with the addition of the new heavy-lift crane installation vessel to their fleet.
The innovative ULSTEIN Alfa Lift project is a response to the increasing demand for efficient transportation and installation solutions within the offshore wind market.
The vessel is currently under construction at China Merchant Heavy Industry (CMHI) and will be available for construction and installation activities from early 2021.

What makes this dynamically-positioned, 48,000 DWT vessel exceptional, is the ability to perform heavy lift crane operations with the main deck submerged. The patent-pending design combines the benefits of a semi-submersible transport vessel with a large, 3,000 mt lifting capacity main crane from Liebherr.

The vessel’s capabilities match the future requirements of the offshore wind industry, allowing her to transport and install upto 10 x 1,500t ultra-large jacket foundations or 11 x 2,000t XXL monopiles plus transition pieces for the largest anticipated Wind Turbine Generators.

‘It is great to work with such capable people. When we approached Ulstein with our intended strategy to enter the offshore renewables market and the idea of adding crane capacity to a semi-submersible heavy lift transport vessel, UDSBV presented their Alfa Lift solution on the spot’, mentions Torgeir E. Ramstad, CEO at OHT. ‘That was a direct ‘hit’, as it allows us to enter the installation market, at the same time expanding on our capabilities in OHT’s core market.’
