Sluisjesdijk?

Goodmorning!

"Oh hello darling!", Elaine said melodiously, "How sweet of you to drop in here! How was your voyage? Must have been rough out there, I thought of you lads all night when that horrible gale was blowing. But at last, you're here...".

Elaine is the approximately 70 year young hostess of the Seaman's Mission at Fowey and you could say she's some kind of institute. One way or another she seems to give you a kind of homecoming-feeling and that has been so already a long time.
If you would consider her words carefully, you'd notice they're a bit Hollywood-like: merely standard-phrases which could apply to anyone. But still, after the tough passage to Fowey, it felt nice.

"Can I get you drink, love?"
"I'll have a drink if you join me...", I replied.
"Oh... I'm afraid I'm on coffee, dear".
"Then coffee it is...".
"Hmm, jolly good then! I'll make us a coffee!".
I always enjoy the English habit of addressing someone of the opposite sex with love, darling, honey, though men won't do that as often as women. And, not being English, I couldn't dare to do so. I think it wouldn't be appreciated either, it is an
English thing only.

"When was the last time you were here in Fowey, darling?", Elaine asked out of the small kitchen, adding even more to that home-feeling.
"I think that was about 2 years ago. Maybe you remember that our Filipino crew sang some Christmas-carols here in the Mission after the Christmas-market?".
"Of course I remember that! That was marvelous, wasn't it?".
And she was right. The atmosphere was great, Elaine invited Fowey people and we talked, ate and drank together. The highlight of the evening was that the Filipino guys of our ship sang a couple of Christmas-carols. The singing was horrible but Elaine's
friends applauded enthusiastically. I suspect they were just being kind.

I was a young apprentice the first time I saw Elaine. Everybody on board, as well as on other ships, seemed to know her name. Quite often you heard on the Dutch inter-ship frequency: "Say hello to Elaine!", if it was heard that a ship went to Fowey.
She was quite pretty and her fame must have to do with, of course, her nice way of conversation, but also her gorgeous eye-catching fore-stem.
I have to say that in those days a well formed pretty woman, 20 years more (life-)experience than I had, could bring up fantasies if you're a young seaman and already months from home...

In those days Fowey was a very industrious and busy port. But nowadays the port is only having 2 ships per week at the max. Weeks pass without a ship, it's a miracle Elaine manages to keep the Mission open!
I remember that in the old days we had to wait in some kind of creek, forward 2 anchors, stern lines on a buoy and 2 ships alongside us. Packs like this could be found on several places on the river. A stay in Fowey could last more than a week and
luckily there was this water-taxi bringing you to the pretty town for a pound. Or to Elaine of course, if you wanted to.

But let's go back to couple of days ago: Elaine and I had a superficial polite conversation on memories of old Fowey, and when our conversation stocked I asked:
"Am I rude if I'd ask you how long you've been here as the keeper of the Seaman's Mission?"
"No love, you couldn't ever be rude to me... Good heavens, it must have been nearly 30 years now! Oh gosh, isn't time flying? So many friends have gone ever since. So many things have changed...".
"Well, you haven't changed much...".
"Oh darling, thank you, that is so sweet of you...", and she tapped my hand lightly.

Maybe a bit surprised of her own little gesture of affection, she suddenly said firmly:
"You look tired, love, it had been a rough couple of days for you. Why don't you go on board and have a good night sleep?".
I still don't know if this was a nice way to end our chat, though I have to admit that I felt really tired.
"Thanks for the coffee and many thanks for our chat. I guess I'll be back within a couple of years..."
"Do come back soon, darling! Be safe, safe voyages and a happy Christmas!"

At the door I turned around for a last goodbye to Elaine, but she was already in conversation with another sailor, as I heard: Oh darling, good to see you! How sweet of you to drop by

Mooi stukkie!
Wat me opviel ...
In those days Fowey was a very industrious and busy port. But nowadays the port is only having 2 ships per week at the max. Weeks pass without a ship,
Par is gesloten.
The times they are a-changin', ik weet het, en niet dat ik nou zo gek was op chinaklei varen, maar toch ...

Erg mooi.
"Good By, my friend." See you again. Sometimes."
Fowey....
