Both vessels are scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2017,
when they will enter into ten year time-charter contracts with Clearlake Shipping Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Gunvor Group.

The company said that the vessels will be tradeable across both,
the new and old Panama canal, and will be built to the highest industry specifications, as per TMS Cardiff Gas standards.

“These orders mark the group’s further expansion into the LPG sector, currently with a fleet of four VLGCs,
all with secured term employment upon delivery. The group maintains its appetite for further growth in the sector,
which is reflected in additional capacity made available by HHI,” the company said.

TMS Cardiff Gas ordered the first two 78,700 cbm LPG carriers from Hyundai Heavy in October this year and the duo is
slated for delivery in Q2 and Q3 2017, when they will enter into time-charter contracts with Shell International Trading and Shipping Company, Limited.

The company, established in 2011 as part of the TMS Group, manages a fleet of five in the water LNG carriers and four VLGC newbuilds.

Hunt continues for cargo containers lost off Florida's coast

Airplanes and a helicopter searched Florida's east coast Monday (Dec 7) for dozens of missing cargo containers,
while crews at the Port of Palm Beach sorted through hundreds left on a crowded barge. The effort was all to find out just what
ended up in the water and whether it poses a threat.

The 340-foot barge Columbia Elizabeth was en route from Port Canaveral, Fla. to Puerto Rico on Sunday (Dec 6)
when the crew of its tugboat noticed several cargo containers hanging over the side, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The barge was diverted to the Port of Palm Beach where it remained docked Monday. As many as 25 containers,
some possibly containing batteries, fell into the ocean, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Just how many batteries ended up in the water, what kind of batteries they are and where they end up could determine
whether they could be an environmental risk to the ocean waters and marine life off Florida's coast, officials said.

By Monday afternoon, the Coast Guard's aerial search had yet to find any of the containers.

And at the port, the unloading of the barge — which can hold more than 300 of the large containers — continued in order
to reach the part of the deck where the containers slid into the ocean. Investigators are trying to find out why the cargo
gave way and take inventory of what was lost, according to the Coast Guard.

"Some of them got crushed and some of them [went] over the side," Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Ryan Doss said.

Remaining containers on the barge Columbia Elizabeth remain tilted while it was docked at the Port of Palm Beach on Monday.
At least 25 cargo containers slipped off a barge Sunday and splashed into the ocean between Port Canaveral, Fla. and West Palm Beach.

TOTE Maritime, of Jacksonville, confirmed Monday that its chartered barge, the Columbia Elizabeth,
"experienced an issue on deck Sunday" that caused containers to become unsecured, according to company representative Michael Hanson.

Shipping companies that lose their cargo can face fines and other penalties,
but it is too early into the investigation into the cargo lost from the Columbia Elizabeth to determine if that would be warranted in this case, Doss said.

"It's not that uncommon for containers to fall overboard, especially if there's bad weather," Doss said.

Vale to Sell 11 Giant Valemax Carriers

Brazil’s Vale SA said on Friday (Dec 4) that it plans to sell its 11 remaining Valemax iron ore carriers and lease them back in transactions that could raise $1.1 billion.
Vale has said it has experienced some delay in selling the ships, the key to its attempt to cut transportation costs between its Brazilian mines and Asian customers,
as it seeks to get the best freight rates under contracts to lease the ships back from the new owners.
Each more than 360-meter-long (1181-ft-long) ship can carry 380,000 to 400,000 tonnes of ore and are among the biggest vessels afloat.
va.jpg
va.jpg (154.83 KiB) 3155 keer bekeken
Vale has been selling its part of the world’s 35-vessel Valemax fleet for about $110 million each, Luciano Siani,
chief financial officer of Rio de Janeiro-based Vale told investors at a conference in London.

The ships are needed to help Vale compete with its principal Australian rivals in the world sea-borne iron ore market.
BHP Billiton Ltd and Rio Tinto Ltd, which are closer to China, the world’s largest market for the mineral,
the main ingredient in steel. By carrying more ore in each vessel, Vale’s per-tonne freight costs falls.
Cost cutting has become an urgent matter for Vale as iron ore fell below $40 per tonne for the first time since spot-market pricing was implemented for major customers in 2008.

It is also now at its lowest since 2005, when prices were still set between major steelmakers Vale and other top miners at annual negotiations.

Vale is also counting on the ships to reduce its carbon footprint, the company said.
The current Valemax vessels burn 35 percent less fuel per tonne of ore moved and the newer vessels will burn even less,
said Peter Poppinga, head of Vale’s ferrous metals division.
During a question and answer session with investors in London,
Poppinga also said Vale plans to drastically reduce ore stockpiles in its southern mine system in
Minas Gerais state part of efforts to “shrink” its southern system operations.

The southern system has higher costs, and produces lower grade ore on average than the company’s northern system,
which is centered on its giant Carajas mining complex in Brazil’s Amazon state of Pará.

With iron ore prices low, the company may not pay dividends next year in order to preserve cash to
finish its planned final year of a giant expansion to its Carajas mine complex, Siani said.

Gas-fuelled multi-purpose design from NACKS with LR approval in principle and risk insight

Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co. (NACKS) and Lloyd’s Register have developed a new 28K dual-fuelled multi-purpose vessel (MPV) design.

The design is an evolution of NACK’s established 28K MPV design; the new design is fitted with a 500m3 Type ‘C’ LNG fuel
containment system located aft and on deck over the engine room and the LNG Fuel Supply System.
The main engine is a MAN ME-GI high-pressure gas fuel system while the main electrical generator and boiler are in a low-pressure gas fuel system.
Accommodation is located forward maximising space for cargo operations and three deck cranes (2sets x 350T, 1 set x 100 T) are situated on the port rail.
sn.jpg
sn.jpg (99.54 KiB) 3146 keer bekeken
Mr.Yamamoto, Vice President of NACK, commented: "MPVs are important workhorses in commercial shipping,
providing more flexibility in operation. While the COP 21 discussions are ongoing,
the industry is required to showcase an appropriate response to the need for ever-cleaner designs.
This evolution of our proven 28,000 dwt MPV design demonstrates that shipping can provide clean fuel designs to meet the requirements of world trade."

The design complies with LR’s Gas Fuelled Ship Rules and also has gone through LR’s ShipRight ARBD (Assessment of Risk Based Design)
Procedure – the highly robust risk assessment analysis and report process pioneered by LR. The dual-fuelled system design and arrangement have also achieved LR’s approval in principle and Gas Ready Class descriptive note – GR(A).

Wei Ying, Principal Specialist and General Manager, LR Shanghai Technical Support Office, said:
"We provide the highest level of expertise and our experience to help the industry make the best commercial decisions based on the best technical insight.
We are continuing to share our understanding of marine risk and the realities of LNG as a marine fuel in both short sea and the development
of designs, like this one, suitable for the deep sea trades by providing the insight and experience needed by ship designers, shipbuilders and operators."

Shell to build innovative bunker vessel to deliver LNG fuel

Shell has confirmed its plans to build a specialised LNG bunker vessel to deliver to LNG-fuelled vessels in northwest Europe.
The new vessel will be based at the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands,
and will load from the new LNG break bulk terminal and jetty to be constructed by the Gas Access to Europe (Gate) terminal.
It will also be sea-going and, therefore, able to bunker customers at other locations.
sh.jpg
sh.jpg (111.16 KiB) 3143 keer bekeken
Demand for LNG as a fuel in the shipping industry is increasing, due to emissions reduction requirements scheduled to come into force in January 2015.
The new fuel will also enable the industry to comply with future regulations.

“This specialised LNG bunker vessel is good news,” said Maarten Wetselaar, Shell’s Executive Vice President, Integrated Gas.
“Potential customers need to know that their LNG fuel will be delivered reliably and safely. Shell’s investment in this vessel,
as well as commitment to buy capacity at the Gate terminal, underlines our confidence in LNG becoming a bigger part of the fuel mix.”

The vessel itself will be pioneering in design and will be built by STX Offshore & Shipbuilding.
It will have a capacity to carry 6,500 cubic metres of LNG fuel and will be highly efficient and manoeuvrable.
Featuring an innovative transfer system and sub cooler unit,
it will be able to load from big or small terminals and able to bunker a wide variety of customer vessels.

Grahaeme Henderson, Vice President of Shell Shipping & Maritime, explains:
“We worked closely with customers on the specifications of this exciting new bunker vessel and will use cutting-edge technology.
I am delighted to be working with STX on this project and Shell is proud to be leading in the development of LNG fuel in shipping.”

U.S. Navy's Largest Destroyer Ever Heads Out to Sea for First Time.

The largest destroyer ever built for the U.S. Navy headed out to sea for the first time Monday (Dec7),
departing from shipbuilder Bath Iron Works and carefully navigating the winding Kennebec River before
reaching the open ocean where the ship will undergo sea trials.

More than 200 shipbuilders, sailors and residents gathered to watch as the futuristic 600-foot, 15,000-ton
USS Zumwalt glided past Fort Popham, accompanied by tugboats.
usd.jpg

Kelley Campana, a Bath Iron Works employee, said she had goose bumps and tears in her eyes.

"This is pretty exciting. It's a great day to be a shipbuilder and to be an American," she said.
"It's the first in its class. There's never been anything like it. It looks like the future."

Larry Harris, a retired Raytheon employee who worked on the ship, watched it depart from Bath.

"It's as cool as can be. It's nice to see it underway," he said. "Hopefully, it will perform as advertised."

Bath Iron Works will be testing the ship's performance and making tweaks this winter.
The goal is to deliver it to the Navy sometime next year.

"We are absolutely fired up to see Zumwalt get underway. For the crew and all those involved in designing,
building, and readying this fantastic ship, this is a huge milestone," the ship's skipper, Navy Capt. James Kirk, said before the ship departed.

The ship has electric propulsion, new radar and sonar, powerful missiles and guns, and a stealthy design to reduce its radar signature.
Advanced automation will allow the warship to operate with a much smaller crew size than current destroyers.
All of that innovation has led to construction delays and a growing price tag. The Zumwalt, the first of three ships in the class, will cost at least $4.4 billion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSJ_uFZEuwo

The ship looks like nothing ever built at Bath Iron Works.

The inverse bow juts forward to slice through the waves.
Sharp angles deflect enemy radar signals. Radar and antennas are hidden in a composite deckhouse.

The builder sea trials will answer any questions of seaworthiness for a ship that utilizes a type of hull associated with pre-dreadnought battleships from a century ago.

Critics say the "tumblehome" hull's sloping shape makes it less stable than conventional hulls, but it contributes to the ship's stealthand the Navy is confident in the design.

Eric Wertheim, author and editor of the U.S. Naval Institute's "Guide to Combat Fleets of the World,"
said there's no question the integration of so many new systems from the electric drive to the tumblehome hull carries some level of risk.

Operational concerns, growing costs and fleet makeup led the Navy to truncate the 32-ship program to three ships,
he said. With only three ships, the class of destroyers could become something of a technology demonstration project, he said.
