Container shipping profitability to deteriorate in 2016

urther widening of the supply-demand imbalance at the trade route level and insufficient measures to reduce ship
capacity will lead to an acceleration of freight rate reductions and industry-wide losses in 2016,
according to the latest Container Forecaster report published by global shipping consultancy Drewry.
The decline in global container shipping freight rates is anticipated to have been as great as 9% last year and Drewry is
forecasting that carrier unit revenues will decline further in 2016, albeit at a slightly slower pace. Excluding 2009,
the past 12 months has seen the lowest spot rates in most major trade lanes and all at the same time.
This is not solely due to fundamental supply/demand imbalances caused by weak volumes and over supply.
Ml.jpg
Ml.jpg (211.18 KiB) 4846 keer bekeken
End of year 2015 spot rates from Asia to the US West Coast and US East Coast were around $815 and $1,520 per 40ft container respectively.
These were easily the lowest since 2009 and with decent cargo growth and load factors of over 90% to the US west coast,
the rate deterioration emphasise that carriers have been fighting for market share and are positioning themselves further for potential shifting
of cargo from the West to the East Coast after the Panama Canal widening.
Spot rates of below $200 per 40ft container in the Asia-North Europe trade during June 2015 were also unprecedented.
While spot rates have staged a recovery since the start of 2016, Drewry believes that these gains will prove short-lived.

Many stakeholders point to the fact that bunker prices of for example $140 per tonne in Rotterdam (IFO380) are clearly
contributing to lower overall container freight rates, but Drewry believes that a new and worrying trend has become apparent for ocean carriers.
Drewry’s most recent data suggests that they are no longer able to cut costs faster than the prevailing declines seen in the freight rate market.
Drewry believes that oil prices have probably hit the market bottom right now and costs for the positioning of empty containers and
vessel lay ups will increase this year.
Latest calculation show that a 10,000 TEU vessel would incur a minimum of $450,000 in reactivation costs if laid up in Asia for three months or more.
It should also not be forgotten that many lines no longer even quote a BAF on same trade lanes.
The consequence of this is that Drewry expects industry losses to widen to over $5bn in 2016.

Ocean carriers believe they have taken a great deal of corrective action during the final three months of 2015 in order to lift very low freight rates.
But the removal of six major east-west services and the blanking of 32 voyages in November and 21 in December did relatively little to improve trade route supply/demand balances.
At the beginning of October 2015, average headhaul east-west load factors were only 85%, compared to 94% one year earlier.

The GRI initiatives implemented in late 2015 did not work for carriers on many trade lanes and in some cases were suspended or postponed because conditions were simply too feeble.
Drewry believes that more needs to be done by the industry to bring about any kind of stability.
Proposed or forthcoming industry consolidation may well reduce the number of big market players and improve individual company efficiency,
but this will not reduce industry vessel capacity in any way.

With the idle fleet touching one million teu in late 2015, or just under 5% of the global fleet,
decisions need to be taken by lines to remove more vessels and re-structure more trade lanes with new operational agreements.
Big vessels no longer guarantee decent profitability and should Asia to North Europe contract rates be signed at an average $900 per feu (and this could be too optimistic) for 2016,
this equates to an estimated $1.4 billion loss for the carriers on one trade lane.

Neil Dekker, Drewry’s director of container research, said:
“Comparisons are being made to 2009 when approximately 1.3 million teu was removed from a considerably smaller fleet.
The mass scale lay ups were triggered by the fact that lines ran out of cash.
The industry is not there yet as some lines are still making a profit and the very low fuel prices are propping them up.
But a further two or three quarters of declining financial profitability may trigger a notable rise in the idle fleet as we enter the second half of 2016.”

Shanghai remains world’s busiest container port with 36.54m teu in 2015

China’s Shanghai port has retained the number one spot as the world’s busiest container port after recording
a 2015 throughput of 36.54m teu, according to figures released by Shanghai International Port (Group) Co (SIPG).
sh.jpg
sh.jpg (202.97 KiB) 8201 keer bekeken
Last year’s box volumes of 36.54m teu represented a 3.5% improvement from the 2014 throughput of 35.29m teu.
While the port of Singapore, Shanghai’s closest rival, has yet to published its 2015 throughput,
the Southeast Asian port posted volumes of 28.41m teu in the first 11 months of last year,
making it impossible to beat Shanghai as it would need a December throughput of 8.14m teu.

In December 2015, Shanghai moved 3.07m teu, an increase of 5.9% compared to 2.9m teu handled in the same period of the previous year.
Meanwhile, port operator SIPG reported a net profit of RMB6.5bn ($988.7m) in 2015, a decline of 4% compared to the gain of RMB6.77bn in 2014.
Revenue for last year, however, rose by 2.5% year-on-year to RMB 29.5bn.

Niets is minder waar.

The usually reserved Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) just told its clients that with emerging market trade as measured by the cost of ocean shipping plunging since August by 67 percent, 2016 will be a “cataclysmic year” and investors should “sell everything".

UASC celebrates the world’s greenest vessel passing through the new Suez Canal

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) and Ahli United Bank, Egypt marked the passing of 18,800 TEU Vessel M.V. Al Zubara,
the world’s greenest ultra-large container vessel, through the new Suez Canal this week.

The event is one of the first in a series of activities being organized by UASC to celebrate 40 years in business and
was attended by senior dignitaries and officials including Dr. Khaled Fahmy,
Minister of Environment (Egypt), Admiral Mohab Mameesh, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, Basil Al-Zaid,
Chief Financial Officer at UASC, Nevine El-Messeery CEO of AUB and Captain Emad Oraby, the General Manager of UASAC Egypt.

Attendees were taken on a guided tour on board while sailing through the new Suez Canal passage,
where Admiral Mohab Mameesh presented a brief introduction to the strategic project.

“Initiating UASC’s 40th anniversary celebrations from the Suez Canal makes perfect sense given its strategic location,
being the fastest maritime route connecting Asia to Europe. UASC’s vessels passed through the Suez Canal around 295 times last year,
reflecting its’ importance to us. Having the new canal operational has helped to reduce our vessel’s transit time, which of course,
reflects positively on the company”, said Basil Al-Zaid, Chief Financial Officer at UASC.

“This celebration is to mark our long term partnership with the Suez Canal and Ahli United Bank,
which not only facilitates our passage payments in the Canal,
but has also contributed to financing UASC’s current newbuilding program, comprising 17 new ships among the most cost-efficient and
environmentally friendly in the world.

Ahli United Bank, with a strategic goal of developing support for the region’s economy, established a special division to support the shipping industry.
The bank facilitates canal passing payments, port projects and berths, as well as supporting the financing of the investment project to develop the canal area.

To date, UASC has received five 18,800TEU class vessels; Barzan, Al Muraykh, Al Nefud, Al Zubara and Al Dahna respectively.
This superior series of vessels are considered the world’s greenest due to their outstanding environmental credentials and first-class technology on board.

Putting these advanced vessels to the test Al Muraykh achieved a record breaking load of 18,601 TEU last month.
This unprecedented westbound shipment was also UASC’s highest utilization to date of this very eco-efficient class,
meaning the CO2 output per TEU on this journey is set to be more than 60% lower if the same containers were shipped on board a 13,500 TEU ship.

The French line is holding discussions with a number of shipyards as well as a leasing company.
CMA CGM has in the past used Chinese leasing companies to expand its fleet.
There have been no new containership orders anywhere in the world so far in 2016,
but brokers anticipate an announcement from CMA CGM soon.

CMA CGM will likely complete its acquisition of Neptune Orient Lines (NOL),
the Singapore owner of containerline APL, by the second hand of this year.
Together with another series of 20,000 teu vessels,
it will cement its third place in the liner rankings despite others merging, notably Cosco and China Shipping.

Boxship Al Zubara lost containers and suffered damages in her maiden voyage in the Mediterranean Sea

The containership Al Zubara lost at least three containers, with an unknown number of others having shifted and been damaged,
in the Mediterranean Sea during a storm in the night on Jan 16/17, while sailing on her maiden voyage.

The new vessel of Kuwait’s state-company UASC was en route from Port Klang to Felixstowe
when was caught in bad weather and hit by one or several big waves.

The ship had to call in Malaga as emergency port in order to assess the damaged containers and goods,
and fix the shifted containers.

In the morning of Jan 18 the tugs Vehintiocho and Vehintinueve towed the ship to the container
dock no. 9 of the Noatum Terminal at 11.15 a.m. LT.

A special crane was contracted to handle the ship, which was carrying a cargo of 12.600 TEU on board.
There were several shifted boxes fore and aft,
the greatest damage occurred in the front of the ship where a series of refrigerated containers were found empty.

Work to remove the broken containers started in the afternoon, others were secured safely.

The railings and secure lines were repaired, the vessel was inspected and resumed the maiden voyage with a slight delay,
which will be compensated during the longer passages.

The ship resumed its voyage on Jan 19 to Rotterdam where is expected to arrive on Jan 22.
