Offshore Marine Management and Rederij Groen provide new concept Operations & Maintenance Vessel

Experienced marine services provider, Offshore Marine Management (OMM) has formed a partnership with leading vessel owner, Rederij Groen (RG), to bring the Offshore Renewables Industry a purpose built Service Operations Vessel (SOV) for the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) market with a versatile design.

The companies engaged Saltwater Engineering in Holland for the design of the vessel. Saltwater's team of professional naval architects provide a great wealth of marine engineering and naval architectural expertise into the design of this new concept vessel, ensuring it meets the long term operational needs of the offshore industry.

The SOV has been designed based on two main principles; real time experiences during the offshore installation, maintenance and repair phases of offshore energy projects and the realisation that distances increase from base ports to wind-farms so there is a requirement to stay offshore longer. The vessels' versatility combines a new approach to offshore maintenance support which enables a proactive response to O&M tasks for both subsea and topside tasks that mitigates risk by utilising only one vessel as platform to maintain customer's whole system integrity. The vessel can deliver both top side preventative maintenance services and subsea cable repair response plans.

As the view of offshore windfarm O&M changes its aims to incorporate subsea risk to the revenues of the windfarm investors. The vessel incorporates this ideology that the windfarm is seen as both topside and subsea but all one asset.

The vessel is designed as a comfortable "platform" for optimal operation of its motion compensated gangway system for personnel transfer and for the active heave compensated deck crane operations with the support of 2 daughter craft. DP performance is guaranteed by the thrusters keeping the vessel in accurate position up to a wave height (Hs) of 2.5 m. The workshops at boat deck level allow for a proper service of the inbuilt diving spread equipment and the inbuilt ROV control and habitats. The ability to carry over 10 containers for spares and supplies to potential offshore accommodation stations will be an asset to any O&M managers.

Her accommodation is arranged such to facilitate 60 POB (crew and offshore workers), with single cabins for the SPS staff all arranged on or above the main deck. The vessel is fitted with a hospital, a fitness room, change rooms (both men and women), a large mess room, a cinema and several recreation areas for the comfort of the technicians and crew who will remain offshore reducing time to site.

The vessel is readily adaptable to support the full O&M work throughout the year, both planned and adhoc work. The back deck of the vessel is strengthened to carry spare cable for emergency repairs of infield cables whilst still providing its primary role of supporting the turbine technicians. This vessel has the endurance of 30 days offshore and will support works around turbine masts, substations platforms, topsides and subsea tasks, power, telecoms and mattress applications as contracted. This vessel is a dynamically positioned, versatile maintenance vessel and for this duty has rapid and efficient handling characteristics.

The companies are working towards delivery in Q4 2017.

Chevron axes Maersk Deliverer contract

Chevron’s Angola affiliate, Cabinda Gulf Oil Co. (CABGOC), sent an early cancellation notice to Maersk Drilling for the ultra deepwater semisubmersible Maersk Deliverer.

The Maersk Deliverer has been on contract with CABGOC since May 2012, and is due to end in December 2016. Upon the terms of agreement, Maersk Drilling is entitled to receive compensation for the remaining part of the contract. The contract cancellation will be financially neutral to Maersk Drilling.

“With regret we take note of the contract termination, and it is a reminder of the very challenging conditions in the offshore rig market with oil companies restraining activities and capital spending in response to the lower oil price environment. We expect to base the rig in West Africa, and will continue to explore opportunities with our customers in primarily West and East Africa, which remain strategic markets for us,” Michael Reimer Mortensen, Maersk Drilling head of global sales said.

Maersk Deliverer was built in 2009 and is designed for year-round operation in areas such as Brazil, the Gulf of Mexico, West and East Africa and Asia Pacific at water depths of up to 3000m (10,000ft.).

Construction start on Johan Sverdrup platform

Apprentice Jens Erik Eriksen in Kværner and Norway’s minister of petroleum and energy Tord Lien marked the construction start on the Johan Sverdrup utility and living quarters platform on the island of Stord, north of Stavanger, today, Thursday 31 March.

“Johan Sverdrup is the biggest industrial project in modern times in Norway, and will create considerable value for society for generations to come. Today we are kicking off the construction of the utility and living quarters platform, which is the second of four platform currently under construction in the first project phase,” says Kjetel Digre, Statoil’s project director for Johan Sverdrup.

Statoil awarded a joint venture between Kværner and KBR the contract for engineering and construction of the topside for the utility and living quarters platform for the Johan Sverdrup field in June 2015.

Stord is central in a comprehensive Johan Sverdrup project. Kværner Stord will fabricate parts of the topside steel frame, and will also assemble all parts for the utility and living quarters platform before the platform is installed on the field in 2019. At peak around 2000Kværner employees will be involved in Johan Sverdrup deliveries.

Kværner’s sub-supplier Apply Leirvik on Stord will construct the accommodation module for the living quarters platform, which will be the biggest on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS).

The other modules for the utility and living quarters platform will be constructed at the Energomontaz Polnoc Gdynia (EPG), Mostostal Pomorze Gdansk (MPG), Mostostal Chojnice and Crist Offshore in Poland, as well as in Gothenburg, Sweden. Detailed engineering is performed at KBR’s office in Leatherhead, London, and at Apply Leirvik on Stord. The fabrication work was also kicked off today at two of the yards in Poland and at Apply Leirvik’s yard.

“The Johan Sverdrup project is growing every day. It is a complex puzzle with activities spread all over the world. We are 14,000 people working on the project every day in 2016, and together we will perform 100 million working hours. We depend on everyone delivering as required, and all pieces of the puzzle falling into place at the right time and with the right quality. Our top priority is a safe working environment. We do not want any injuries among personnel working for the Johan Sverdrup project,” says Digre.
The utility and living quarters platform will accommodate the crew working on the Johan Sverdrup field during the field life of 50 years. The platform will have the largest living quarters on the NCS with a capacity of 560 people. The platform will also accommodate the field’s control and emergency centre, and some utility systems covering the whole field centre.

The platform will be completed in the first quarter of 2019, before it is installed on the Johan Sverdrup field by use of the world’s largest heavy-lift vessel, the Pioneering Spirit.

Norwegian Shipowners’ Association Reports Growing Number Of Vessels In Layup

The Norwegian Shipowners’ Association says that as of February 2016, 101 offshore vessels belonging to its members were in lay-up.

“If the shipowners’ prognosis is realised, this number will grow by 10 by the end of June 2016,” said the association. “A significant increase is expected in the number of stacked rigs. As of February 2016 the total was 16, and offshore contractors expect this number to rise to 23 by the end of June 2016.”

The association said its members also anticipate more staff reductions in 2016. In all, between 4,000 and 4,500 employees are expected to be laid off or terminated over the course of the year, compared to 7,300 in 2015. Available training positions are expected to fall by around 200 in 2016. The association said the majority of reductions will be Norwegian apprenticeships in the offshore contractor and offshore service segments.

Fugro completes offshore works for EOWDC at Aberdeen Bay

Fugro has completed offshore works undertaken in preparation for full construction of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) at Aberdeen Bay, Scotland.
The geotechnical site investigation took place at 11 turbine locations to assess the seabed, with the data acquired being used to inform the final design and micro-siting of the turbine foundations. Full offshore construction is scheduled to start in late 2017 or early 2018, after an investment decision later this year.

Fugro’s dynamically-positioned 78-metre geotechnical drilling vessel, the Bucentaur, was mobilised to the EOWDC site, located about 2km to 5km off the coast of Aberdeen. The site investigation work was on behalf of Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm Limited (AOWFL).

Dennis van den Bulk, Fugro’s Senior Project Manager described some of the details of the site investigation. “A two phased approach was adopted over a period of 11 days. During the first phase we conducted seabed CPTs and seismic CPTs down to refusal at each of the turbine locations, and in the second phase we drilled three boreholes,” he explained. “The offshore phase was completed safely, successfully and without any significant downtime, validating the solution.” The data and samples acquired during the field phase were transferred to Fugro’s Wallingford laboratory and offices for further analysis and reporting.

Vattenfall and Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG) are the partners behind AOWFL. The company is driving the project forward, reaffirming its commitment to seeing the much-needed industry scheme come to fruition. Widely recognised as a vital investment in Scotland’s renewables infrastructure, the EOWDC aims to establish a world-class hub of offshore wind know-how, technology and innovation, particularly during these challenging times for the North Sea oil and gas industry.

Andy Paine, head of UK offshore wind development for Vattenfall and project director for AOWFL, said, “The pioneering EOWDC will help establish the north east of Scotland as a global centre of innovation for the offshore wind industry. It is through test and demonstration of next generation products and services that offshore wind will become a low cost sector.”

Keppel FELS Brasil secures FPSO project worth over BRL 500 million from MODEC

Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M), through its subsidiary, Keppel FELS Brasil SA's BrasFELS shipyard has been awarded a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) module fabrication and integration project by its repeat customer MODEC Offshore Production Systems (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., a MODEC, Inc. group (MODEC) company, for a contract value of over BRL 500 million (SGD190 million).

BrasFELS' work scope for this project comprises the fabrication and integration of nine topside production modules for the FPSO Cidade de Campos dos Goytacazes MV29. The vessel is expected to arrive at the shipyard by the first quarter of 2017 for the integration phase.

The most established offshore shipyard in the Latin American region, BrasFELS has successfully completed a range of construction, integration, upgrading and repair projects over the years.

When completed, the FPSO Cidade de Campos dos Goytacazes MV29 will have the capacity to process 150,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) and 5 million cubic metres of gas per day. The unit's storage capacity is 1.6 million barrels of oil.
Slated to depart the shipyard in the third quarter of 2017, the FPSO will be deployed at Tartaruga Verde and Tartaruga Mestiça Fields, in the Campos Basin, off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

Mr Sateesh Dev, Executive Managing Officer of MODEC, Inc. said, "We are very pleased to work with BrasFELS on a fifth FPSO project as they have always delivered to our satisfaction. Three units, which have been completed safely and ahead of schedule, are operating successfully in their respective fields. BrasFELS' current job for MODEC is the integration and commissioning of the FPSO Cidade de Caraguatatuba MV27. The FPSO is expected to arrive at BrasFELS in the second quarter of 2016, and will be deployed in the Lapa Field, Santos Basin, Brazil.

The FPSO Cidade de Itaguaí MV26, which was delivered by BrasFELS to MODEC in mid-2015 achieved first oil production four months ahead of the schedule, in the Iracema Norte Area of Lula Field in Brazil.

In the past five years, BrasFELS delivered five FPSO projects safely and ahead of schedule, of which three were for MODEC. The above contract is not expected to have a material impact on the net tangible assets or earnings per share of Keppel Corporation Limited for the current financial year.

Wärtsilä Ship Design chosen for offshore maintenance vessel

Wärtsilä has been awarded the contract to provide the design for a new jack-up lift vessel. The contract was signed in March with a well known Chinese yard and there is an option for three more vessels. The Wärtsilä design is developed in collaboration with Altis, a consultancy company specialising in the lift boat market.

Wärtsilä Ship Design has considerable experience in designing offshore and specialised vessels, and its selection for the design of a new, next generation, lift vessel is considered an acknowledgement of the company’s strong track record. Lift vessels are self-propelled and provide an offshore elevating platform with manoeuvring capabilities to support various operations, including oil well intervention activities, and the maintenance, repairs, upgrades and removal of offshore rigs. This latest Wärtsilä design provides better performance compared to conventional designs. In particular its crane capacity, MLC (Maritime Labour Convention) compliance, accommodation, operational water depth, and DP2 (Dynamic Positioning) are all areas where improvements have been made.

“Wärtsilä was chosen to design this new series of vessels because of our expertise, as well as our strong track record in the offshore market. Furthermore, our global engineering and project development services mean that we can be a valuable local partner to both the yard and the owner,” says Riku-Pekka Hägg, Vice President, Ship Design, Wärtsilä Marine Solutions.

The 70.5 metre long vessel can accommodate 250 people and will be capable of operating in water depths of up to 75 metres. It is scheduled for delivery to the customer in September, 2017.

Keppel Singmarine to deliver high-specification derrick lay vessel to McDermott

Keppel Singmarine, a wholly owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M), will soon deliver a high-specification deepwater derrick lay vessel to Hydro Marine Services, a subsidiary of McDermott International .

The derrick lay vessel, which is built to Keppel's proprietary design, was named DLV 2000 during a ceremony held earlier today. The first project she will be deployed for is the INPEX Ichthys Liquefied Natural Gas project in offshore Western Australia.

Mr Chow Yew Yuen, Chief Executive Officer of Keppel O&M, said, "We are pleased to deliver what would be McDermott's flagship derrick lay vessel to add to their growing global fleet of specialised vessels. DLV 2000 has been designed with enhanced features to work in water depths of up to 10,000 feet and in severe weather conditions. Developed by Keppel's design arm, Marine Technology Development, DLV 2000 is capable of achieving efficient pipelay rates for long trunklines and operating in severe weather conditions while maintaining significant thrust output and power distribution. Although DLV 2000 is designed to carry out pipelaying using the S-lay installation method, the vessel has the flexibility to accommodate a deepwater, 500-tonne flex-lay system that can be installed as needed in response to market needs.

DLV 2000 is one of a number of specialised vessels that Keppel Singmarine has recently delivered, adding to its strong record of designing and building some 400 ships of various specifications and functions.

Aker Solutions Signs Subsea Services Contract With Petrobras

Aker Solutions secured an agreement to provide maintenance and other services for subsea facilities at Petrobras-operated oil and gas fields offshore Brazil.
The contract is for a fixed term of three years valued at BRL 435 million net of taxes (NOK 1 billion) and may be extended by another three years. It covers maintenance, storage, supply of parts and technical assistance for all subsea equipment delivered by Aker Solutions to Petrobras in Brazil.

"Brazil is a key global offshore market," said Luis Araujo, chief executive officer of Aker Solutions. "We have a nearly four-decade presence in the country and are committed to finding solutions to help Petrobras develop its petroleum resources in the most efficient and sustainable manner possible."
Aker Solutions is in April opening a new subsea manufacturing center in Curitiba, doubling its local production capacity. The company is also upgrading its subsea services unit in Rio das Ostras to better meet customer demand.

The contract will be managed at the base in Rio das Ostras in Rio de Janeiro, at a local content rate of 87 percent. This builds on a commitment to develop partnerships with national suppliers.
"We are pleased to be able to continue providing top-notch services and technologies to support Petrobras' production and growth plans in the pre-salt deepwater fields," said Maria Peralta, head of Aker Solutions in Brazil.

The agreement is similar to one signed in 2011 for maintenance of equipment and other offshore services. Currently, Aker Solutions' subsea lifecycle services unit has about 360 employees in Brazil, of which 150 are part of the technical team working offshore. The company has about 1,300 employees in the country.
The contract is booked as part of Aker Solutions' first-quarter order intake.
