The Offshore Renewables Award To The SOV Vessel Windea La Cour

Siemens Wind Power, BS Offshore and Ulstein have received the OSJ Offshore Renewables Award 2017 for the SOV vessel Windea La Cour.
The Offshore Renewables Award is awarded to a company, project or product that has made a significant contribution to the development of the offshore renewables market during 2016.
The Windea La Cour was nominated, and eventually won, the award, partly due to its X-STERN aft hull. Reports show that vessels servicing the offshore wind turbines operate backwards at least 50-70 per cent of the time after having arrived at the wind farms. The video below was shot at the vessel's sea trial, where the backing abilities were tested.

Shortlisted for the award were:
Palfinger’s turbine blade access system, the PBA, for which Senvion recently became the first customer
Windea La Cour, a turbine maintenance vessel for BS Offshore/Siemens, the world’s first X-STERN hullform vessel
Barge Master’s Gangway system for personnel and cargo. The Barge Master Gangway Model 3.0 compensates vessel motions in significant wave heights of up to 3m
Voith for the Voith Linear Jet. The VLJ is a new type of propulsor combining the best properties of conventional propellers with the best properties of conventional waterjets.
Another Ulstein designed vessel, the ALP Striker, was shortlisted for the 'Support Vessel of the Year' Award.

Tropical Shipping has chosen to expand its fleet with proven technology from our portfolio and I am confident they will be served well by it.”
The ME-C engine
MAN Diesel & Turbo initially introduced electronic, fuel injection control on its large bore, ME-C engines, which are a more compact form of their ME-B counterparts. The ME-C range’s electronic controls are characterised by:

fully integrated electronic control
low SFOC
superior performance parameters
appropriate fuel injection pressure and rate shaping at any load
improved emission characteristics

Fincantieri wins contract award from NCL for the construction of 4 new generation cruise ships

Fincantieri was awarded an order from Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. for the construction of 4 new generation cruise ships with an option for additional 2, for the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) brand. The value of each ship is approximately 800 million euros, with one delivery per year from 2022 to 2025, stretching to 2027 in case of confirmation of the option.

Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) and Sace, together with a pool of export credit lenders, have played a crucial role for the success of the order and the ship owner’s decision, giving Fincantieri the chance to offer an appealing technical, commercial and financial package, still subject to some conditions.

These ships will form the backbone of the future NCL fleet, being about 140,000-tons, almost 300 meters long, and accommodating 3,300 guests. The order is based on a prototype project developed by Fincantieri, which enhances the consolidated features of NCL’s signature offering of freedom and flexibility, qualified by an innovative configuration for an enhanced passenger experience. In addition, focus was set on energy efficiency, with the twofold aim of optimizing consumption at sea and reducing environmental impact, compliant with all the most recent regulations on this matter.

“This new class of ships will continue Norwegian Cruise Line brand’s legacy of introducing meaningful innovation to the cruise industry”, said Frank Del Rio, President and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “This order continues to highlight our disciplined newbuild program, extends our growth trajectory well into the future, enhances our already attractive earnings profile and drives expected long-term returns for our shareholders”.

Commenting the announcement, Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri, said: “This outstanding result allows us to include a new prestigious client in our portfolio, which confirms Fincantieri’s ability to develop with a flexible approach leading-edge solutions for every segment and demand of the modern cruise industry. We are very proud of the project for these ships: we developed it internally and we presented it to the shipowner, which appreciated it so much to order an entire class”. Bono concluded: “Different stakeholders of the export chain have contributed decisively to achieve this goal and they have gained our full recognition. The remarkable value of the order has to be added, obviously, on top of these factors: the Group will benefit from it under economic and workload terms and the order will further extend the utilization horizon of our shipyards, not comparable with any other industrial segment. We are also honored to significantly support the growth of our country’s economy, which, as we all know, requires a considerable effort to regain its role in the world market”.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings is one of the top cruise companies in the world. Besides NCL, it operates the Regent Seven Seas Cruises brand, to which Fincantieri has delivered in Sestri Ponente (Genoa) the ultra-luxury ship Seven Seas Explorer in 2016 and is now building a sister ship with delivery expected in 2020 in Ancona, as well as Oceania Cruises, for which the group has built in the yard of Sestri “Marina” and “Riviera”, respectively in 2011 and 2012.

The Werkendam is being built by Neptune in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, the Netherlands. It will take about twelve months to build the crane vessel. After completion, the vessel will be able to run on LNG, with gas oil as backup. With a 38 m3 tank on the aft deck, the Werkendam will be able to store enough LNG on board to sail and operate for fourteen days without bunkering LNG.

Thanks to smart features, the vessel will use less fuel and emit less CO2 without compromising operational production. The Werkendam will be equipped with various sensors and energy storage systems. The sensors will monitor the energy consumption of almost all of the equipment and systems on board, which will even make it possible to store and reuse overcapacity, for example when operating the crane. The data produced by these monitoring systems will provide crew members with an insight into energy consumption, enabling them to respond appropriately.

“Energy efficiency is one of the top items on our sustainability agenda. To reduce our carbon footprint, we are researching the use of alternative fuels, such as LNG and biofuel. With this investment, we will be gaining experience of LNG-powered vessels and the related benefits”, said Jaap de Jong, Staff Director of the Ship Management Department at Van Oord.

Specifications:

Length: 68.40 m
Breadth overall: 11.40 m
Hopper capacity: 700 m3
Propulsion: 2 x 550 kW
Bow thruster: 450 kW
LNG-powered generator: 3 x 475 kW
LNG tank: 1 x 38 m3
Spud poles: 2 x, electric-powered
Crane:
Type: four-rope grab crane

DAMEN Secures Order With FORTESCUE Metals Group For Six ART 85-32W Rotor Tugs

To support Second Towage Licence for the Port of Port Hedland
Pilbara Marine Pty Ltd (Pilbara Marine), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (Fortescue) has placed an order with Damen Shipyards for the building of six, 32 metre Rotor Tugs. These will be deployed at the company’s operations at Port Hedland on Australia’s west coast, the world’s largest bulk export port. From there, Fortescue exports 165-170 million tonnes of iron ore per year.
dt.jpg
dt.jpg (64.8 KiB) 5275 keer bekeken
The six tugs are of the ART 85-32W class, designed by Robert Allan Ltd. Their Rotor®Tug propulsion system features three azimuth thrusters; two forward and one aft. Together these deliver the full 85 tonnes of bollard pull over both the bow and the stern, and 65% from amidships. The Rotor®Tug system delivers additional benefits regarding manoeuvrability, braking, and engine and winch redundancy. The W notation refers to the increased beam of these designs, providing additional stability during escorting operations conducted regularly at Port Hedland.

In May 2016 Pilbara Marine was awarded a second towage license by Pilbara Ports Authority for the port of Port Hedland and the new ART 85-32W rotor tugs will enable it to offer long-term, sustainable towage services.

The six Rotor Tugs will be built at Damen’s Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam. The first two are scheduled for delivery ex-yard by the end of October 2018, with the remaining four due in early 2019.

“Damen, as a world leader in the design and construction of tugboats, has been very successful in Australia for many years. This project underlines again that Damen listens carefully to our customers’ needs and that they value our superior quality vessels built for competitive prices, along with our technical expertise and after sales services. These factors have proven the difference in the success of this project,” says Vincent Maes, Area Sales Manager.

Rebecca Hayward, Legal Manager Strategic Contracts / Developments at Fortescue Metals Group, added: “After reviewing the market, Damen was an obvious choice because of its global reputation for outstanding quality leading to lower running costs, as well as its proven track record of delivering vessels on time, within budget. We are confident that our full operational requirements will be met by the new ART 85-32W design and are heartened by the fact that Damen will provide long term support here in Western Australia.”

Panama Canal Sets Daily Tonnage Record in February

With this new daily tonnage record, February is the third consecutive record-breaking month for the Panama Canal.

In February 2017, the Panama Canal set a new daily tonnage record of 1.18 million Panama Canal tons (PC/UMS) after welcoming a total of 1,180 vessels through both the Expanded and original locks. The previous record was established the month prior in January 2017 when the Canal recorded a daily tonnage average of 1.16 PC/UMS.

With this achievement, February is the third-consecutive record-breaking month for the Panama Canal. In December 2016 and January 2017, the waterway set monthly tonnage records after transiting 35.4 million PC/UMS and 36.1 million PC/UMS, respectively.

“These records are evidence of the maritime industry’s growing adoption of the Expanded Canal,” said Panama Canal Administrator Jorge L. Quijano. “As the new lane continues to reshape global maritime trade and its true impact becomes more and more apparent, we will continue to offer new growth opportunities to our customers and cargo destinations around the world.”

Eight months since the Inauguration, approximately 850 Neopanamax vessels have transited the new locks, and 53% of cargo transiting the waterway in container ships are using the Expanded Canal. In addition, 11 new liner services have been rerouted to take advantage of the economies of scale the Canal offers. As the impact of the Expansion becomes more evident, this number is expected to increase.

Further, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels, as well as bulk carriers, tankers and vehicle carriers have transited the Expanded Canal since it was operational in June 2016. And in April 2017, the first Neopanamax cruise ship, capable of carrying up to 4,000 passengers, will transit the new locks.
