With a total installed capacity of 44,180 kW ‘Orion’ will be equipped with a high-tech crane with lifting capacity of 3,000 tonnes at more than 50 metres. The loads can be lifted to an unrivalled height of more than 170 m. Deck space has been maximised to provide exceptionally high transport and load capacity. The vessel can take the heaviest monopiles, jackets, wind turbine components and structures in a single shipment. With this unmatched combination of high load and lifting capacity, ‘Orion’ can transport and install the next generation of giant multi-megawatt wind turbines.
Environmental considerations have been an important element of the vessel design. ‘Orion’ has dual fuel engines and can run on natural gas (LNG). It will have a Green Passport and Clean Design notation. It will also have other environmental innovations on board, such as a waste heat recovery system that converts heat from the exhaust gasses and cooling water to electrical energy.

The 216.5 metres long Orion, featuring DP3 capability, can accommodate a crew of up to 131 people.

Luc Vandenbulcke, Managing Director GeoSea: “With ‘Orion’ we will be uniquely positioned to meet the future requirements of our customers and the trend towards larger capacity turbines and bigger wind farm projects, delivering energy at lower costs. ‘Orion’ will be capable of installing mega monopiles at greater depths. With DP3 technology the offshore installation vessel can continue operations under the most challenging conditions.”

The Plugging & Abandonment (P&A) of wells and offshore preparatory works were carried out from the jack-up vessel Kraken. While Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) of the P&A took place, Scaldis team also performed Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) of the topside pad eyes, installed an access platform between the jacket and topside and placed a gangway landing platform on the jacket.

RAMBIZ, Scaldis heavy lift vessel, was mobilized from Flushing, the Netherlands, on March 10, 2017 and arrived at the offshore field two days later. Over the following three days, the complete platform was decommissioned; an in- and out-seabed survey was carried out; the topside was cut, lifted and sea fastened onboard the RAMBIZ; the jacket piles were dredged and cut; the Internal Lifting Tools (ILT’s) were installed; and the jacket was lifted. The RAMBIZ returned to a disposal yard in Flushing with the topside stowed on deck and the jacket suspended in the PS crane.

“The joint team effort from all parties involved including the outstanding cooperation from the client was key to this successful project,” said Igor Mastenbroek, Project Manager at SCALDIS. “The beautiful weather, excellent crew, detailed preparations and our good alliance with Tullow Oil also helped us to safely execute the decommissioning well ahead of schedule.”

“It has been an absolute pleasure to work closely with the SCALDIS team,” said Darin Scales, Senior Project Engineer for Tullow Oil UK Ltd. “Throughout the project lifecycle, SCALDIS has exceeded expectations and I would definitely recommend them for similar projects in the future. It was a slick and seamless operation.”

Van Oord signs contract for modification offshore installation vessel Aeolus

The upgrade program of the vessel, contracted to Damen Shiprepair at Schiedam, will result in increased capabilities of the vessel with respect to loading capacity, accommodation and crane capacity. This is achieved by the installation of sponsons, strengthening deck, enlarged spud cans and a new accommodation module with helideck.

Furthermore, the existing 900 tonnes crane will be replaced by a 1,600 tonnes LEC (Leg Encircling Crane). This capacity increase of the vessel will enable Van Oord to continue to install increasingly larger foundations and heavier turbines at offshore wind farms.
The work on the adjustments starts in September 2017.

The upgraded vessel will be operational in spring 2018 and will then have the biggest heavy-lift crane in its class. The new crane has been ordered from Huisman, a heavy installation equipment specialist based in Schiedam/Rotterdam.

The Aeolus was previously active in offshore wind projects Gemini and Luchterduinen and will take on new projects after her upgrade like offshore wind-farm Borssele 3 & 4 in the Netherlands and Norther in Belgium.

The modification plans of the Aeolus fit in the strategy of Van Oord which is aimed to deliver innovative solutions to the offshore wind industry. In addition, Van Oord is responding to the rapidly growing and changing offshore wind industry. As partner of the Dutch TransitionCoalition Van Oord aims to accelerate the energy transition according to the call of the European Union for cutting greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40 percent before 2030.

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion Completes Series Of Works On Jan De Nul Group Vessels

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC) has recently completed works in Vlissingen and Brest on two major vessels in the fleet of dredging and marine construction specialist Jan de Nul Group. One of these is the Vole Au Vent, a 140-metre jack-up vessel built specifically for the installation of the latest generation of offshore wind turbines. The other is the trailing suction hopper dredger Leiv Eiriksson. Both vessels are among the largest in their classes, anywhere in the world.

The jack-up vessel Vole Au Vent arrived at Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen (DSVI) late in 2016 having spent the summer working on the Nobelwind offshore wind farm off the coast of Belgium. She came to DSVl for modifications necessary for her second phase on the Nobelwind project; the installation of the WTG scope. These required the demobilisation of her existing equipment used for the foundation campaign and the installation of a new configuration for the WTG installation phase.

Over the course of two weeks, her 3,400m² main deck was cleared of equipment and temporary structures and restored to its clean, completely flush layout. This allows it to accommodate wind turbine installation equipment and components, towers and blades for its next deployment off the coast of Belgium. DSVl also fabricated and installed some new deck structures including grillages for the transport of the WTG towers and nacelles.

On 16 February, Jan de Nul Groups 223-metre trailing suction hopper dredger Leiv Eiriksson departed from Damen Shiprepair Brest after a three-week maintenance programme. This followed an 18-month assignment on a large-scale land reclamation project in Nigeria.
The works included replacement of the 1700mm discharge lines, changing the power cables for the suction arms, fresh paintwork, the assisting of specialist sub-contractors with steering gear, propulsion and thruster repairs, valve repairs and minor steel works. With a hopper volume of 46,000m³ and a DWT of 78,500 tonnes, the Leiv Eiriksson is one of the world’s largest dredgers.

Carlos de Vliegere, sales manager at DSC, commented: “Jan de Nul Group is a valued customer of the Damen Shipyards Group and we are delighted to have been able to deliver the services they required for these impressive vessels within the timescales required.”

Heerema Awarded First Contracts for its new Crane Vessel Sleipnir

Heerema announced on Wednesday the first two contract awards for its New Crane Vessel Sleipnir.
The first contract is from Noble Energy Mediterranean, Ltd. for transportation and installation services associated with the Leviathan Production Platform in the Mediterranean Sea, while the second transport and installation contract has been awarded by Maersk Oil for the new production and living quarters platforms as part of their Tyra Future project.

These awards mark Heerema’s first contracts for its new semi-submersible crane vessel Sleipnir; due to come into service early 2019. Sleipnir will be equipped with two 10,000 MT cranes and is currently under construction at Sembcorp Marine in Singapore.
The awards are also a confirmation that the industry welcomes a lifting capacity that provides the opportunity to install larger integrated structures in a single lift without compromising the flexibility and robustness of traditional installation methodologies. In these cases, Sleipnir will be performing multiple ultra-heavy lifts, some of which will be in excess of 15,000 MT. The ability to install larger modules than currently possible, with existing equipment, allows both customers to minimize offshore hookup and commissioning activities.

As part of these contracts, Heerema will furthermore utilize several of its own barges for the transportation of the various platform components, such as its H-591 being used for the launch of a 15,000 MT jacket, thus exemplifying the benefit of Heerema’s distinctive asset base and ability to offer complete platform transportation and installation solutions.

“It is encouraging to see that in the current market conditions, there are still clients that truly value, and continue to invest in, strategic relationships with the contractor community. The award of these projects, while the Sleipnir is still nearly two years from completion is a tribute to the longstanding relationship between Heerema and Noble and Maersk Oil respectively, and we appreciate their trust in Heerema’s track record”, says CCO Harke Jan Meek.
