More Space for big Ships in Hamburg: Project to Redesign the Vorhafen Harbour Basin En-trance completed

More manoeuvring space for big ships, faster berth assignment and improved safety of navigation: Well within the schedule, both in terms of time and money, the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) Tuesday officially completed the project “Redesigning the Entrance to the Vorhafen Harbour Basin”.

The widened Vorhafen basin access benefits both container shipping and cruise shipping. For one, the tidal (time) windows available to inbound and outbound ships are longer now and the manoeuvring space for big ships in the Tollerort area has increased. For two, it is now possible for cruise ships with a beam of 40 metres (formerly 32.3 metres) to berth at the Cruise Center Altona. Moreover, additional waiting berths for feeders can later be provided, which will help reduce vessel movements in this highly frequented section of the port.

The Vorhafen harbour basin is the approach to the cargo terminals in Steinwerder. Its location along the main current of the Norderelbe combined with the former river bank geometries had created river current conditions that only allowed ships with a maximum width of 370 metres to enter and leave the basin. The now completed widening project permits the passage of vessels with a beam of up to 400 metres.

“The widened Vorhafen basin entrance has made vessel traffic management more efficient, easier to plan and safer,” says Jens Meier, Chairman of the Management Board of the HPA, and adds, “With the now optimised waterside access we have added another important piece to the port’s infrastructure that will further increase the competitive edge of the Port of Hamburg and benefit both container shipping and cruise shipping.”

Frank Horch, Hamburg Minister for Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation explains, “We are developing the port with an eye on the future, and the infrastructure must be upgraded and expanded accordingly. This project is another milestone in the development of the port. Shipping companies and terminal operators will benefit in particular.”

The project comprised three major construction phases:

The soil of a four-hectare large site at the Tollerort tip was removed to create more water surface area. Part of the excavated material was used to backfill what was left of the Kohlenschiffhafen harbour basin, thus creating additional areas for the Containerterminal Tollerort (CTT) and the Köhlbrandhöft sewage plant. The remaining soil was temporarily stored at the adjacent Kuhwerder Terminal for use in future port development and other infrastructure projects.
On the northern Tollerort river banks new foreshore structures were built. An about 250-metre-long quay wall starts at the north-eastern corner of the Tollerort tip and turns into a roughly 350-metre-long embankment line in the western section. The already existing quay wall at the northern end of the Europakai was reinforced by an about 90-metre-long foreshore quay wall.
To reinforce the existing all-round quay wall at Lotsenhöft, a roughly 160-metre-long quay wall structure was built in front of it.
Due to the above measures ships can now manoeuvre in a space with a diameter of 450 metres, berth assignment has become more flexible and the safety of navigation in the Tollerort area has improved.

GustoMSC introduces new light drilling jack-up rig design

The NG-5500X-LD is the latest design in GustoMSC’s successful series of self-propelled jack-up designs, the NG series. Based on the proven and seasoned NG-2500X and NG-1800X designs, the NG-5500X-LD is a solution for light drilling and well intervention in a large number of mature fields in the Southern North Sea, Middle East and South East Asia.

gmv.jpg (37.19 KiB) 4317 keer bekeken
The conditions of these fields are characterized by water depths of up to 50 to 80 meters pending the region. Until now this was the domain of classic drilling jack-ups and tender barges with associated day rates and operational restrictions. With the light drilling cantilever, the NG-5500X-LD bridges the gap between the successful shallow to midwater service units and the full-fledged drilling rigs.

As with all NG series designs, one of the key features of the NG-5500X-LD is that it designed with practical and survival capability in mind. The unit can remain offshore when adverse weather conditions occur, resulting in more workable days, greatly enhancing efficiency and a minimum of non-productive hours during operational charters. With the excellent maneuverability (DP2), diagonal pre-loading, fast transit (up to 8 knots) and maximum safety & accuracy when making use of the Variable Frequency Drive controlled jacking system, the NG-5500X-LD enjoys all benefits of the successful GustoMSC NG series.

The light drilling rig will ensure high utilization as it can serve a variety of brown field needs, such as Light Drilling, Well Intervention and Plugging and Abandonment. The large clean main deck (approx. 1,200 m2) allows for flexible use while the cantilever featuring the X-Y Skidding System provides a large drilling envelope of 18.3 m x 7.9 m (60 ft x 26 ft). This envelop ensures access to a vast majority of brown field platform layouts seen in the Southern North Sea, Middle East Gulf and South East Asia. Another advantage comes from the fact that the entire cantilever and drill floor structure is raised above main deck by approximately 3.6 m (12 ft). This allows for improved material handling as a forklift can drive underneath, and thus reduces crane lifts from the PS to the SB side and vice versa. It also provides additional deck space for container storage and, crucially, provides additional means to handle mud return, cuttings and SWARF. With 250 tons of hook load at 60 ft and up to 350 tons (770 kips) at 50 ft the rig can truly perform light drilling operations with a drilling depth of 12,000 ft.

Golden Ocean Group Acquires 16 Modern Dry Bulk Vessels

Golden Ocean Group Limited (NASDAQ and OSE: GOGL) (Golden Ocean) Tuesday announced that it has entered into agreements to acquire 16 modern dry bulk vessels in an all-share transaction where the Company will issue in aggregate 17.8 million consideration shares and assume debt of USD 285.2 million (the Acquisition).

Of the 16 vessels to be acquired, 14 will be acquired from subsidiaries of Quintana Shipping Ltd. (Quintana), and two ice class Panamax vessels will be acquired from subsidiaries of Seatankers, an affiliate of Hemen Holding Ltd. (Hemen), the Company's largest shareholder. The Acquisition will add significant scale to Golden Ocean's operating fleet and contribute to reducing cash breakeven levels. Based on the closing price of the Golden Ocean share on the Oslo Stock Exchange on March 14, 2017 of NOK 61.50, equal to USD 7.14 per share at a USD/NOK exchange rate of 8.6078, the aggregate transaction value is approximately USD 412.4 million.

Birgitte Ringstad Vartdal, CEO of Golden Ocean Management AS, commented: "We are proud to be in the position to acquire a large number of modern, high quality vessels in an all-share transaction. This underscores the value the sellers ascribe to our operating platform, management team and corporate strategy. The acquired vessels, averaging 4 years of age, which matches the age profile of our existing fleet, will further enhance our already significant commercial scale and increase our operational leverage to a potential dry bulk market recovery. Combined with attractive bank financing which includes no fixed debt amortization and soft covenants through June 2019, the transaction should be accretive also in terms of cash breakeven levels. We consider the price obtained to be attractive and expect the transaction to be significantly value-accretive to our shareholders."

As part of the Acquisition, Golden Ocean will acquire Quintana's 14 vessel fleet and assume the fleet's corresponding debt of USD 262.7 million in consideration for 14.5 million shares of Golden Ocean. Golden Ocean has agreed to a USD 17.4 million down payment of the debt associated with the fleet in order to obtain no fixed debt repayments and soft covenants through June 2019. A cash sweep mechanism will be in place for excess cash generated by the fleet. The fleet consists of 6 Capesize vessels and 8 Kamsarmax/Panamax vessels, mainly built in Japan and Korea. The vessels will be owned by a non-recourse subsidiary to Golden Ocean.

Additionally, Golden Ocean will acquire two 2017-built ice class Panamax vessels from affiliates of Hemen in consideration for 3.3 million shares of the Company to fund the equity portion of the acquisition. Hemen will issue a seller credit of USD 22.5 million that matures in June 2019, with no fixed amortization. These vessels will also be owned by a non-recourse subsidiary of Golden Ocean.

Completion of the Acquisition is subject to the execution of definitive loan documents, Golden Ocean raising sufficient new equity to satisfy certain loan conditions, customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Closing is expected to be during the second quarter of 2017 and on a vessel-by-vessel basis.

DNB Markets is acting as financial advisor to the Company in connection with the Acquisition.

Damen Wins Construction Deal From Nigeria’s Homeland For Additional FCS 3307 Patrol Vessel

Just over a year after it took delivery of the second of two FCS 3307 Patrol vessels, Homeland Integrated Offshore Services Limited (Homeland) of Nigeria has ordered one more of the same class with an option on a second, to be named Guardian 3 and Guardian 4.
Like their two predecessors, the two vessels are being supplied as a turnkey solution. The Damen Group is taking care of delivery and crew training, as well as the design and build. Damen’s Local Service Hub in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, will ensure that maintenance, repairs and any additional support is handled by Damen engineers.

da.jpg (69.6 KiB) 4316 keer bekeken
Homeland supports international oil companies working in Nigeria’s offshore oil and gas fields by providing engineering, procurement, construction, installation and security services. Like the first two vessels, the primary mission of the two new Guardians will be carrying out security patrols for the production companies, as well as occasional transfers of crew and supplies. The 33-metre vessels will be fully compliant with the technical requirements of the production companies, and even exceeding them in the case of the top speed which at 30 knots is five knots faster than the specification. 18 bunks will be fitted for crew and security personnel, who can remain on board for up to four weeks. The wheelhouse is bullet-proof and additional equipment includes 15 seats for crew transfers, thermal imaging, a diesel powered SOLAS Fast Rescue Craft and an additional fuel separator to protect the engines and generators from contaminated fuel.

An integral part of the contract is the total care solution that Damen is providing to Homeland. The Damen Service Hub in Port Harcourt has now been operating for two years and is manned by a technical manager and several specialist engineers, ready to render assistance and undertake a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks in order to minimize downtime. This level of local support is a service that very few other shipyards can offer. For maximum convenience the vessels will be delivered on their own keel by Damen crews from Singapore to Nigeria and following handover the Homeland crew will each be given a week’s training before beginning operations.

Homeland Managing Director Louis Ekere commented; “Both us and our clients have been delighted with the performance of our first two FCS 3307 Patrol vessels. They remain the most capable craft of their type operating off the coast of Nigeria and we already have charter contracts lined up for both of them. Having the support of the Damen Local Service Hub gives us the utmost confidence that they will consistently operate at full capacity and capability.”

Already under construction as part of Damen’s build-for-stock policy, the Guardian 3 is almost complete except for some additional items and Guardian 4 will be ready within a few months, for delivery in the second quarter of 2017.
