Rolls-Royce and MacGregor to explore implications of Autonomy for container ships

Rolls-Royce and MacGregor, part of Cargotec, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on research and development to explore the impact of developments in autonomy for cargo ship navigation and cargo handling systems on-board container ships. This collaboration will harness both companies’ unique experience laying the groundwork for the development of autonomous container ships.

Pasi Lehtonen, Senior Vice President, Strategy, Business Development and Marketing, MacGregor said; “MacGregor wants to reshape and transform the industry to make it much more efficient, safer and more sustainable. In the segments where we operate, we see a lot of unnecessary waste in the forms of inefficiency, damage to cargo, and continuously dangerous working conditions. Our aim is to minimise this waste from the value network and this collaboration on autonomy for container ships is a good example of where industry leaders work together to transform the industry.”

Asbjørn Skaro, Rolls-Royce, Director Digital and Systems, said: “Rolls-Royce is pioneering remotely controlled and autonomous ships and believes such a remote controlled ship will be in commercial use by the end of the decade and a common sight on the high seas by 2030. For the full benefits of such a change to be realised many activities currently done today manually will need to be done autonomously. This research will help us explore how that might be achieved.

“As a leading provider of cargo handling solutions and services for container ships, MacGregor brings a detailed knowledge of the cargo sector and can provide valuable insights into marine cargo operations and the technology and systems needed to make them as efficient and safe as possible.”

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) delivers the world’s first icebreaking LNG carrier to Russia

South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) mostly in the news for liquidity woes demanding another multibillion-dollar public bailout on Tuesday released a positive announcement of delivering the world`s first icebreaking liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier to Russia`s state-run shipper Sovcomflot.

The South Korean shipbuilder will be paid 240 billion won ($215 million) for the first delivery for a fleet of ice-breaking tankers for the Russian company. Although icebreaker is not new, a gas tanker designed to force its way through the Arctic is the first kind. DSME was awarded a $4.8 billion contract to build 15 vessels of the kind. Each ship costs $320 million and DSME received an advance on the first supply. The payment on schedule is nevertheless a relief to the shipbuilder struggling to run its elephantine dockyard amid lack of new orders and maturing debt.

The icebreaking LNG carrier, 299 meters long and 50 meters wide, can carry 173,600 cubic meters of LNG, which is enough to fuel gas for entire Koreans for two full days.

The icebreaking Arc-7 ice class carrier, capable of sailing through 2.1-meter-thick ice, is made of special steel plate, three times thicker than typical plates. DSME successfully completed a month-long test sail of the ship in the Arctic Ocean in November.

The ships will be deployed for Russia’s national Far East resource development in the Yamal Peninsula, in the western part of Siberia. The remaining 14 carriers would be delivered incrementally over the next three years.

Wijnne Barends orders 6 new vessels

Delfzijl-based shipping company Wijnne Barends, recently placed an order at the Indian shipyard "Chowgule & Company" for the construction of 6 identical, energy-efficient vessels.
The vessels, with a deadweight capacity of about 4,200 tons and a length of 98 metres, are designed to meet the increased environmental requirements that apply to newly built vessels (Tier III standards).

These standards, applicable worldwide and aimed at the reduction of emissions of nitrogen dioxide, were put into effect for all newly built vessels on American waters in January 2016. In 2021, these standards will also apply in the main area of operation for the company, the North - and Baltic seas. Because of this trade region these vessels, with a cargo hold of more than 6,000 m³, meet the highest Swedish/Finnish ice class. The delivery of the first ship has been scheduled for the last quarter of 2018. The vessels will be added to the existing (Lady-H) series in intervals of four months.

Wijnne Barends is investing heavily in energy saving and environmental care. In addition to the delivery of m/v Lady Astrid in December 2016, the final vessel in a series of 12 highly energy-efficient (Dutch-built) vessels, it's the only Dutch shipping company with short-sea vessels that are equipped with exhaust gas wash-installation (scrubber), in order to continue to meet the maximum standards allowed for sulphur emissions, without change of fuel.

Wijnne Barends is a part of the Amsterdam-based Spliethoff Group that plays a leading role in the worldwide transportation of project cargo, heavy lifts, general and Ro-Ro cargoes and yachts. The group manages a large and modern fleet of over 100 multi-purpose, heavy-lift, Ro-Ro and semi-submersible vessels ranging in size from 3,000 to 23,000 tons DWT, under the Dutch flag. Spliethoff Group consists of Spliethoff’s Bevrachtingskantoor, BigLift Shipping, Sevenstar Yacht Transport, Transfennica, Bore and Wijnne Barends.

Oost, west...ook best

Wijnne Barends bestelt zes Lady-H schepen in India

DELFZIJL 29 maart 2017, 11:00
