Pipe-laying of TurkStream gas pipeline in deep water commenced

Gazprom Friday started laying the TurkStream gas pipeline in the deep-water area off the coast of Anapa. The operations were launched with the command given by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to the Pioneering Spirit pipe-laying vessel.

Vladimir Putin and Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, explored the machinery and equipment of the vessel, including its gas pipeline construction facility used for welding and applying protective coatings to pipes.
“Pioneering Spirit, the world's largest construction vessel, will have an important task to solve, namely to build the deep-water section of the TurkStream gas pipeline. This is a new direct and reliable route for Russian gas supplies to Turkey and further to southern and southeastern Europe.

For Turkey natural gas is the key energy source accounting for 38 per cent in the country’s electricity generation and used for heating and cooking in upward of 12 million households. TurkStream will substantially increase energy security in the region.

Natural gas is of equal importance to southern and southeastern Europe. The declining indigenous gas production and the necessity to reduce coal's share in electricity generation across the Balkan countries create the potential for sustainable growth in natural gas demand in that part of Europe,” said Alexey Miller.

Background

TurkStream is the project for a transit-free export gas pipeline stretching across the Black Sea from Russia to Turkey and further to Turkey's border with neighboring countries. The first string of the gas pipeline is intended for Turkish consumers, while the second string will deliver gas to southern and southeastern Europe. Each string will have the throughput capacity of 15.75 billion cubic meters of gas per year. On October 10, 2016, Russia and Turkey signed the Intergovernmental Agreement on the TurkStream project. South Stream Transport B.V., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom, is responsible for the construction of the gas pipeline's offshore section. On May 7, 2017, the Audacia vessel started the construction of the TurkStream gas pipeline near the Russian coast.

Allseas Group is the world's leading company in offshore pipe-laying and subsea construction. The company is focused on comprehensive project implementation, including design, material and equipment procurement, construction, and commissioning.

Pioneering Spirit is the world’s largest construction vessel, the dimensions being 477 meters in length and 124 meters in width. The vessel is designed to lay pipelines in deep-water areas, as well as to install and dismantle large oil and gas offshore platforms.

First sign of Johan Sverdrup emerging offshore

Last week the jacket for the Johan Sverdrup riser platform was installed by Thialf crane vessel owned by Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC). Weighing a good 26,000 tonnes the jacket is the largest on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS).
The jacket is stretching 140 metres from the seabed, where it covers an area measuring 94 times 64 metres. It is attached to the seabed by 24 poles weighing more than 9000 tonnes in total.

“This is a special milestone for us, because it is the first visible sign of the Johan Sverdrup field. I am happy that the installation has been carried out safely and fully in line with the plan. We are now looking forward to the next steps of this industrial adventure and the long line of major operations awaiting us. We have already done a lot of work on and below the seabed, and in the time ahead we will gradually become more visible above the sea surface as well,” says Kjetel Digre, project director for Johan Sverdrup.

Head of transport and installation on Johan Sverdrup Thor Kråkenes has followed the installation of the jacket that was delivered by Kværner Verdal.

“The execution of the work has simply been a feat of engineering. It took a lot of good work and detailed planning to prepare the careful lowering of the jacket onto the seabed without any unforeseen incidents,” says Kråkenes.

The topside is scheduled for installation next year, and production from the field is to start at the end of 2019. Plateau production is estimated at 40% of NCS oil production. Expected field life is 50 years and the ambition is a world class recovery rate of 70%. Recoverable resources are estimated to be between 2 and 3 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

DEME secures submarine cable installation contract for Elia Modular Offshore Grid

Dredging International, part of the DEME Group, has secured the contract from Belgian transmission system operator Elia for the submarine power cable installation for the Modular Offshore Grid (MOG) in the North Sea. DEME will deploy its new fleet of vessels to carry out the works, including hoppers ‘Minerva’ and ‘Scheldt River’ and DP3 cable installation vessel ‘Living Stone’.

Elia’s Modular Offshore Grid, or so-called electricity plug, includes an Offshore Switchyard Platform (OSY) located about 40 kilometres off the Zeebrugge coast, to which four wind farms will be connected. Submarine cables will link the platform with a substation in Belgium, where produced wind energy will be injected in the Belgian onshore grid.
The installation scope includes the supply, installation and maintenance of the submarine power cables. One 220kV power cable will be installed along a 4,5 km route between the Offshore Switchyard Platform and the first windfarm’s platform. Also, two 220kV submarine power cables of approximately 39 km each will be installed from the Offshore Switchyard Platform to the onshore connection point located on the beach in Zeebrugge. The contract has a value of approximately EUR 130 million. Cable will be produced by Hellenic Cables, a Greek manufacturer, as a subcontractor for DEME.

de 2.jpg (63.42 KiB) 24359 keer bekeken
For seabed preparation, DEME will deploy its dual fuel hoppers ‘Minerva’ and ‘Scheldt River’, the newest additions to the fleet and the world’s first LNG powered dredgers. Cables will be installed by multipurpose vessel ‘Living Stone’, entering the DEME fleet in 2017 and operated by Tideway. ‘Living Stone’ features DP3 capability and has been equipped with dual fuel engines with LNG being its prime fuel. Two turntables below deck, each having a 5,000 tons cable capacity, can carry, transport and install more than 200 km of cable in a single trip. By executing the works with this modern fleet of vessels, the environmental impact of the offshore installation works will be kept to the absolute minimum.

The Modular Offshore Grid is scheduled to be taken into use in the third quarter of 2019.

Aberdeen Harbour supports Maersk Oil decommissioning campaign

Two subsea mid-water arches weighing around 100 tonnes each are just some of the items that have been landed at Aberdeen Harbour as the port supports Maersk Oil’s decommissioning campaign for the James, Janice, Affleck and Leadon fields in the North Sea.
In conjunction with Scotoil and Maersk Supply Service, Aberdeen Harbour has supported Maersk as it works to safely recover subsea infrastructure from these decommissioned fields.
A total of nine shipments, due to be complete in September, will be brought to Aberdeen by the vessel Maersk Achiever.

The Janice decommissioning programme in its entirety involves more than 37,000 tonnes of material being brought ashore, of which more than 90% from the 4 fields will be recycled.

Colin Parker, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Harbour Board, commented: “The port has been handling decommissioning work for several years now, including the decommissioning of sizeable structures since 2014, and we are ideally placed to support such work, given that we are home to a range of specialist disposal and recycling service companies, fully licensed SEPA approved project areas, and our trunk road accessibility.

“Our capabilities in this area are due to expand even further once Aberdeen South Harbour is operational in 2020, but we continue to welcome decommissioning work into the existing harbour, and believe that the service we are providing is of the highest quality”.

Craig Smith, Managing Director of Scotoil added: “Several of the units involved in this job have been too large to ship by road in their current state, but we have been able to use the Aberdeen Harbour and Scotoil Licensed Area within the port to down-size the units, ready for onward road transportation, thereby providing a cost-effective processing solution for our customer. We hope to carry out many similar projects in conjunction with Aberdeen Harbour Board in the future.”

The offshore wind farm will consist of 31 8 MW wind turbines and will have a rated power of 252 MW. This is enough to provide more than 178,000 homes annually with sustainable energy. Once completed, the offshore wind farm reduces CO2 emissons by more than 360,000 tonnes per year. The reduction fits to the goals set by the German government to reduce CO2 emissions in 2020 with 40% compared to 1990.

John Brace, Chief Executive Officer of Northland Power: 'We had a great experience working with Van Oord on our Gemini wind farm. Van Oord is one of the world’s leading contractors in offshore construction, and we have developed a very strong and collaborative relationship. Together we look forward to delivering another high quality project.'

“Our cooperation during the Gemini project has proved very successful. We are confident that this will be another excellent cooperation between Northland Power and Van Oord. Both Northland Power and Van Oord share the ambition to contribute to the further development of offshore wind as reliable renewable energy source,” said Arnoud Kuis, Director Van Oord Offshore Wind.
