APM Terminals Tangier celebrates 10 years in Morocco with the Munich Maersk

APM Terminals Tangier welcomed the Munich Maersk, one of the world’s largest container vessels, as it made its maiden call to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the largest and most modern terminal facility in North Africa.

APM Terminals Tangier is one of the most important transfer points of global trade. In addition to handling Moroccan import and export cargo, the terminal manages and transfers cargo for onward destinations in Africa, Latin America and beyond. Tangier's strategic location and state of the art facilities provide easy accessibility to cargo vessels sailing between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

The Munich Maersk is one of the largest vessels in the Maersk Line fleet, and second in a series of Maersk Line’s improved Triple-E class. With capacity to hold 20,000 containers, the vessel is the largest container ship to call a port in Africa as part of a regular rotation.

“We are delighted to welcome this latest addition to Maersk Line’s fleet in Tangier, just as we celebrate 10th anniversary of our operations. This is yet another confirmation of the strategic importance of APM Terminals Tangier as not only the gateway to Morocco, but as a leading transhipment hub in the region”, says Hicham El Alami, Chief Operating Officer at APM Terminals Tangier.

Since starting operations in July 2007, APM Terminals Tangier volume has grown 72%, to handle more than 1.7 million containers per year. The terminal operates at highest levels of energy efficiency and has reduced its CO2 emissions by 30% since 2009.

To ensure future competitiveness, the terminal recently acquired two super post Panamax cranes, to serve giant vessels like the Munich Maersk. This brings the total number of cranes in operation at the terminal to ten. Investments in elevating more cranes to serve even larger vessels in the future are underway, which will further cement Morocco's place as an important orchestrator of global trade.
“With this maiden call of Munich Maersk to Tangier, we have yet another opportunity to celebrate our good cooperation with the city, the port and APM Terminals,” added Marcos Hansen, Maersk Line’s Managing Director in Western Mediterranean. As the latest addition to our modern fleet, this new vessel continues our commitment to serve our customers in 2/3 Morocco and around the world in an even more efficient, environmentally-friendly and sustainable way.”

With a high focus on operational efficiency and safety, APM Terminals Tangier has a strong track record in providing high quality services to customers and has become an employer of choice in the country. Furthermore, the terminal team takes pride in partnering with the community to provide a variety of education, sport and social economic programs.

OOCL Germany named at Samsung Heavy Industry shipyard, Geoje Island

Today, OOCL celebrated the christening of Hull H2173, a 21,413 TEU newbuilding constructed at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard on Geoje Island. Named as OOCL Germany, this mega containership is the second of the six 21 thousand TEU class vessels on order at the shipyard. They are an important part of enhancing the competitiveness and efficiency of Company's modern fleet.

As with many of OOCL newbuildings, extra efforts have been made to ensure that they are operationally efficient and meeting the highest environmental standards. In fact, the OOCL Germany, and her sister vessels, are designed with many advanced green features that can help meet future environmental requirements. For instance, the energy efficiency of these containerships not only satisfies the current Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) baseline requirement, but is 48% better than the EEDI level required by the International Maritime Organization in 2025.

“The state-of-the-art technologies in these newbuildings are truly pushing boundaries,” said Mr. Andy Tung, Chief Executive Officer of OOCL, during his commemorative remarks at the naming ceremony. “As a ship owner, meeting environmental requirements are important considerations when working with the shipyard to ensure that we can make the vessel as ‘future proof’ as possible, particularly how we are seeing environmental standards and requirements becoming more and more stringent in the industry over the years.”

“It has been a real privilege for us to be working alongside Samsung Heavy Industries, our long-standing business partner, on this journey – sharing the same commitment to aim high and deliver quality product and services.”

Among our distinguished guests at the ceremony, OOCL was honored by the presence of the Vessel Sponsor, Mrs. Akiyo Moue, and her husband Mr. Nozomi Moue, Managing Executive Officer of Shinsei Bank, as Company's Guest of Honor. In recognition of OOCL's special guests from Shinsei Bank, Mr. Tung thanked Mr. Moue and his colleagues for the business partnership and the Bank’s support to OOCL.

“When we first started discussions with Shinsei Bank about 5 years ago, we were both interested in cultivating our relationship and finding the right opportunity to collaborate on a project together,” said Mr. Tung. “Two years later, our first transaction was made and kick-started our business partnership that later extended to financing support for the OOCL Germany, paving way towards what I strongly believe to be a long-term banking relationship in the making. We are truly honored to have Shinsei Bank in our portfolio and we really look forward to exploring new opportunities that may take our collaboration into the next level.”

The OOCL Germany will be serving the Asia-Europe trade lane on the LL1 service and her port rotation is:
Shanghai / Ningbo / Xiamen / Yantian / Singapore / via Suez Canal / Felixstowe / Rotterdam / Gdansk / Wilhelmshaven / Felixstowe / via Suez Canal / Singapore / Yantian / Shanghai in a 77-day round trip.

“Orient Overseas Container Line” and “OOCL” are trade names for transportation provided separately by: Orient Overseas Container Line Limited (“OOCLL”) and OOCL (Europe) Limited respectively and both are wholly-owned subsidiaries of Orient Overseas (International) Limited, a public company (0316) listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Headquartered in Hong Kong, OOCL is one of the world's largest integrated international container transportation and logistics companies, with more than 330 offices in 70 countries. Linking Asia, Europe, North America, the Mediterranean, the Indian sub-continent, the Middle East and Australia/New Zealand, the company offers transportation services to all major east/west trading economies of the world. OOCL is one of the leading international carriers serving China, providing a full range of logistics and transportation services throughout the country. It is also an industry leader in the use of information technology and e-commerce to manage the entire cargo process.

CMA CGM gaat over de 22000 TEU's heen.

CMA CGM to build world's largest container ships at Chinese yards-China Daily

Reuters Staff

SHANGHAI, Aug 23 (Reuters) - French shipping group CMA CGM plans to build nine of the world's largest container ships at two Chinese shipyards, the China Daily newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co confirmed that it and its sister yard Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co, had received a letter of intent from CMA CGM for the ships, which would be capable of carrying 22,000 20-foot equivalent unit containers (TEU), the newspaper said.

The final order was subject to board approval from both sides, the newspaper said. Both yards are owned by state-run China State Shipbuilding Corporation.

CMA CGM did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Calls to Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding outside office hours were not immediately answered.

Should they be built, CMA CGM's 22,000 TEU vessels will leapfrog the OOCL Hong Kong to take the crown of the world's largest container ships. The OOCL Hong Kong has a carrying capacity of 21,413 TEU.

SHI and DSME set to win US$1.5 billion deal for the construction of MSC new containerships

Two South Korean shipbuilders -- Samsung Heavy Industries Co. (SHI) and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) -- are expected to win a combined US$1.5 billion deal, industry sources said Wednesday.

According to industry tracker TradeWinds, the Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC) is working on an order for up to 11 container vessels.

cyd.jpg (109.99 KiB) 8335 keer bekeken
MSC is close to a deal with Samsung Heavy for up to six 22,000-TEU vessels and is expected to turn to Daewoo Shipbuilding for a further five, the report said.

The deals, if clinched, will help local shipyards struggling to win more shipbuilding deals.
Entering this year, local shipyards have bagged more new orders than expected but recently have suffered a setback in securing more contracts.

South Korean shipbuilders have been under severe financial strain since the 2008 global economic crisis, which sent new orders tumbling amid a glut of vessels and tougher competition from Chinese rivals.
The country's top three shipyards suffered a combined operating loss of 8.5 trillion won in 2015. The loss was due largely to increased costs stemming from a delay in the construction of offshore facilities and an industrywide slump, with Daewoo Shipbuilding alone posting a 5.5 trillion-won loss.
In 2016, Hyundai Heavy managed to post profits, but the other two suffered losses.

COSCO Shipping plans $2 billion share sale to build ships.

COSCO Shipping Holdings said on Monday it would raise 12.9 billion yuan ($2 billion) through a share sale to build new ships as it returned to profit for the first nine months of the year.
The Chinese shipping giant reported a profit of 2.7 billion yuan for the nine months to September, after making a loss of 9.2 billion yuan over the same period last year.
coc.jpg

Having flagged that it would post a profit earlier this month, it also posted revenues of 67.6 billion yuan as a global recovery in freight rates gathers pace.
COSCO Shipping, which suspended trading in its mainland-listed shares last Thursday, said it would undertake a private placement to fund the building of 20 container ships, six of which will be able to carry over 21,000 twenty-foot containers.

Trading in its shares will resume on Tuesday.
The container shipping industry entered a period of recovery this year after a prolonged slump, which has prompted shipping lines to contemplate new ship orders. In September, France’s CMA CGM said it would order nine giant container ships from Chinese shipyards.

The MOL Truth is the first containership with a capacity of over 20,000 TEU built in Japan, and the fifth in a series of six 20,000 TEU containerships that are operated by MOL. On October 25, the vessel was named MOL Truth. The new containership is 400m long, with a breadth of 58.5m, and has a loading capacity of 20,182 TEU. It will ply the Asia-Northern Europe trade as part of THE Alliance.
The MOL Truth adopts a host of advanced technologies to reduce its environmental impact, such as low-friction hull paint, a high-efficiency propeller and PBCF, a high-efficiency engine plant, and an optimized hull shape. These features will reduce CO2 emissions by 25-30% per container in comparison with MOL-operated 14,000 TEU-class vessels. The ship's design also allows conversion to LNG fuel, in anticipation of stricter standards on vessel exhaust emissions in the future.

Hyundai Merchant Marine to Set Sail for 6th Place in World by Placing Orders for 20 Super Containerships

Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) aims to become a top 10 global shipping company by ordering 20 super large containerships. HMM is expected to have a capacity of 800,000 TEUs and rank sixth in the world when the company secures a super large containership fleet.
hy.jpg
hy.jpg (68.14 KiB) 9705 keer bekeken
Caption: Container ship Hyundai Drive - Image courtesy of Steve Greenwood.

According to the investment bank (IB) industry and shipping industry on November 15, HMM will order 20 large-sized container ships starting early next year. “HMM will order 20 large-sized vessels, including nine 20,000-TEU containerships and 11 11,000-TEU containerships for aggressive fleet expansion,” a high-ranking official in the IB industry said. “This strategy aims to deal with major shipping companies’ expansion through mergers and acquisitions and the introduction of super large ships.” This is twice the size of the order projected in the market (around 10 units). In terms of order sizes (350,000 to 400,000 TEUs), HMM’s order is double that (220,000 TEUs as of the end of October) of Maersk, the world’s top shipping company.

An analysis says that HMM will ramp up the number of super large ships as a strategy to cope with the global division and congregation. HMM currently has 56 vessels and its capacity (maximum shipment volume) is 43,000 TEUs, ranking 13th in the world. On the other hand, Maersk which belongs to the 2M Alliance with HMM has a capacity of 3.55 million TEUs and MSC, 3.02 million TEUs, eight times that of HMM.

In particular, next year, Japan is expected to merge its three major shipping companies (MOL, NYK, and K Line). Then the new shipping company established via the merger is expected to have a capacity of 1.7 million TEUs. China’s major shipping company Cosco (1.81 million TEUs) will finally marry OOCL (670,000 TEUs) of Hong Kong, which is the seventh largest in the world in 2019. Then Cosco’s capacity (including that of ordered ships) will exceed 3 million TEUs, jumping to second or third place in the world.

In particular, China’s Cosco (Ocean Alliance) and Japanese shipping firms (THE Alliance) are expected to put 20,000-TEU containerships into the Asian market beginning next year. This means that HMM will not be able to compete in such an environment as the shipping company has a maximum capacity of 400,000 TEU and its largest container ship has a capacity of 13,100 TEUs.

Around the year of 2020, nine 20,000-TEU containerships and 11 11,000-TEU containerships to be ordered beginning next year will be delivered to HMM. Then, HMM will have a capacity of more than 800,000 TEUs, about double its current capacity. This volume exceeds that of now-defunct Hanjin Shipping and close to 1,060,000 TEUs of Evergreen, the biggest shipping company in Taiwan. At the time of the final delivery of the 20 vessels ordered, HMM will raise the number of its over-10,000-TEU vessels from 16 to 36. As HMM’s long-term plan aims at securing a one-million-TEU fleet, the shipping company may order more super large containerships depending on future business performances.

Caption: The OOCL Scandinavia unveiled at the christening ceremony held at the SHI shipyard.

“In commemoration of this milestone at OOCL, we are very honored that Mr. Yue Yi, Vice Chairman, Executive Director and Chief Executive of the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Ltd, was able to join us as our Guest of Honor and witness the christening of the vessel.”

“The Bank of China is one of the finest and most respected international financial institutions in the industry and their support to OOCL has been tremendous, allowing us to be the best that we can be in providing quality transportation and logistics services around the world, but particularly in China, where OOCL launched and pioneered the reefer-on-rail services from Xian to Qingdao in 1998, the first of its kind in the country.”
As an active industry player in this vibrant market, facilitating trade and exploring new opportunities, OOCL was front and center in witnessing China’s remarkable growth momentum to become one of the world’s most influential economies today. China is moving towards its next ambitious phase of development by working more closely with its trading partners to realize the One Belt One Road initiative in promoting trade and commerce. In his remarks at the ceremonial event, Mr. C. C. Tung, Chairman of Orient Overseas (International) Ltd., commented on the importance of this initiative and also thanked the Bank of China for their support over the years.

“The One Belt One Road initiative comes at a very important time in the shipping industry where leadership and policy directions to stimulate demand growth is needed most,” said Mr. Tung. “We are in a very capital intensive business, and like the Belt and Road initiative, we cannot do it alone. That is why we are very thankful to have our close business partners by our side in our journey, and we look forward to further deepen our working relationship with the Bank of China in the years ahead.”
Mr. Tung also thanked SHI for their dedication and support to OOCL over the years to consistently build vessels of the highest quality that greatly strengthened the competitiveness of OOCL’s fleet and capability to deliver reliable and efficient services to customers.

“The incredible work that has gone into the construction of this massive containership before us is the perfect embodiment of what teamwork means and how business collaboration can achieve wonders,” said Mr. Tung. “This achievement is about working to bring people and companies of different professions and nationalities together to reach new heights, innovate, solve complicated engineering problems, and along the way, why not break a world record too!”

The OOCL Scandinavia will be joining her sister vessels the OOCL Hong Kong, OOCL Germany, OOCL Japan and OOCL United Kingdom in serving the Asia-Europe trade lane on the LL1 service and her port rotation is:
Shanghai / Ningbo / Xiamen / Yantian / Singapore / via Suez Canal / Felixstowe / Rotterdam / Gdansk / Wilhelmshaven / Felixstowe / via Suez Canal / Singapore / Yantian / Shanghai in a 77-day round trip.

http://www.motorship.com/news101/lng/th ... lng-orders
Win GD verhaal:
https://www.wingd.com/en/media/press-re ... inerships/

Dus de auteur van het artikel in Ankerpark zat er aardig naast.

Orders to be placed for twelve 23,000 TEU & eight 14,000 TEU mega containerships

Accelerate HMM’s ‘Capacity of 1 Million TEU’ strategy
Seven 23,000 TEU at DSME (Five 23,000 TEU at Samsung Heavy Industries; Eight 14,000 TEU at Hyundai Heavy Industries)
Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has selected shipbuilders to build eco-friendly mega containerships which fulfill its ‘Capacity of 1 Million TEU’ strategy.
hi.jpg
hi.jpg (85.29 KiB) 8586 keer bekeken
Since HMM sent out a Request for Proposal (RFP) to shipbuilding companies on April 10, HMM has considered all the conditions for newbuilding including delivery date and price of new ships suggested by shipbuilders, and finally selected three shipbuilders to sign a Letter of Intent (LOI) for 20 new vessels.

First, HMM chose Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and Samsung Heavy Industries for seven and five 23,000 TEU containerships respectively which are expected to deliver in the second quarter of 2020. HMM also selected Hyundai Heavy Industries for eight 14,000 TEU containerships to be delivered in the second quarter of 2021.

HMM formed a ‘newbuilding examination committee’ in order to thoroughly review all the conditions and selected shipbuilders followed by fair procedures.
After signing a Letter of Intent with shipbuilders, HMM will negotiate further details of new shipbuilding including prices and conclude the final agreement.
